Bubble Forest Public Sculpture

Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2020

Proceeding with orientation, this image presents a large-scale outdoor sculptural installation photographed at night against a deep black sky. The sculpture consists of approximately twenty tall vertical stems rising from a clustered base at bottom center, each stem curving gracefully upward and outward before terminating in a disc-shaped illuminated head. Beginning at the base and moving upward, the stems appear constructed of smooth metallic material, their surfaces reflecting the colored light from above in gradients that shift from deep blue to violet to magenta to pale green depending on proximity to different illuminated heads. The stems are roughly the width of a human arm and reach heights that tower above a standing person, as evidenced by a small human figure visible at lower right holding what appears to be an umbrella, their form silhouetted in blue light. The illuminated heads crowning each stem are constructed as flattened toroidal or disc shapes, somewhat like deflated spheres or thick rings viewed from above at slight angles. Each head displays intricate internal structure of fine concentric lines radiating from center to edge, reminiscent of the texture of a sliced mushroom gill or delicate spiderweb, creating a sense of fine ribbed fabric that might feel like touching countless tiny parallel threads. The colors of these heads range across a full spectrum, including cool aquamarine blue like a tropical lagoon, deeper cobalt suggesting twilight ocean depths, fresh chartreuse green like spring leaves backlit by sun, emerald green with the richness of polished stone, soft magenta reminiscent of orchid petals, and violet purple suggesting evening primrose. Light emanates from within each form, creating soft glowing aureoles that bleed gently into the surrounding darkness like warmth radiating from a hearth. At far right edge, palm fronds are visible, their yellow-green leaves catching blue illumination, providing tropical environmental context. The overall sensation is of standing beneath an enchanted luminous garden, surrounded by gentle colored light in refreshing evening air.

"Bubble Forest" is a public sculpture made of acid resistant stainless steel. The material has the property of reflecting both natural and artificial light. During the night, it is illuminated with programmable RGB LED lamps. It was created as a reflection on the ability of plants to produce oxygen. The title forest consists of 18 steel stems/trunks ending with crowns in the form of spherical constructions representing a single air bubble. “Bubble Forest” refers to the terrestrial flora as well as to that known from the bottom of lakes, seas and oceans.
