Golden A' Design Award Winner 2020
Scanning from background to foreground through Fernando Pozuelo's Ryad Private Garden captured at twilight, listeners should envision a formal garden space measuring approximately fifty meters deep. The distant sky occupies the upper quarter of the composition, displaying a gradient from deep cobalt blue at top through soft periwinkle to warm peachy amber near the horizon, suggesting the transitional moment just after sunset when daylight yields to evening. Silhouetted against this gradient stands an ornate tower structure at center, featuring decorative arched openings that emit warm golden light, reminiscent of a lantern scaled to architectural proportions. Flanking this focal point, mature deciduous trees with broad spreading canopies create a protective green frame, their foliage rendered in deep forest tones receiving dramatic uplighting from ground level that makes their trunks glow amber against shadowed branches. Moving into the middle ground, the garden unfolds with cultivated abundance. To the left, terraced planting beds contain ornamental grasses and shrubs in muted sage and silver tones, punctuated by decorative lanterns featuring intricate geometric metalwork patterns that cast warm honeyed light. Large natural boulders in cream and tan tones emerge from the plantings, their rough surfaces contrasting with the refined geometry of the designed elements. To the right, an illuminated pool emits soft aquamarine radiance, its water surface smooth as polished glass. The foreground commands attention with a bold central pathway constructed of smooth pale gray stone, perhaps limestone or polished concrete, extending directly toward the viewer. This walkway features a distinctive raised central spine running its full length, flanked by recessed channels filled with shallow water that reflects golden light from concealed sources beneath the pathway edges. Rectangular panels of closely manicured lawn, soft as velvet carpet, flank the pathway on both sides, their deep green color suggesting cool dampness. The overall atmosphere feels tranquil, private, and ceremonial, like entering a place designed for contemplation and sensory pleasure.
The challenge consisted in modernizing an old country house and turns it into a realm of peace and quiet, comprehensively working both on the architectural and landscape areas. The facade was renewed, civil work was did on the pavings and the swimmimg pool and retaining walls were built, creating new forge ironworks for the archways, walls and fences. Gardening, irrigation and the reservoir, as well as lightning, furniture and accessories were also comprehensively delt with.
