Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021
A contemporary residential building photographed at twilight occupies the full frame, presenting an entrance facade composed of interlocking geometric volumes in warm earth tones and cool gray concrete against a dramatic blue evening sky streaked with soft clouds. Scanning from left to right, the composition begins with a long horizontal wall constructed of rough-textured limestone in warm cream and golden tones, its surface suggesting coral or natural stone with an irregular tactile quality like weathered rock faces. Three rectangular window openings punctuate this wall, glowing with soft warm light like honey-colored illumination from within. Moving rightward, the central focal point emerges as a tall timber screen constructed of vertical wooden slats in rich reddish-brown tones reminiscent of mahogany or tropical hardwood, the individual members arranged at varying intervals creating an organic rhythm. Warm golden light filters through this screen from the interior, creating dozens of small luminous apertures that twinkle like a constellation of amber jewels against the darker wood. Above and beside this screen, smooth concrete volumes in cool dove gray rise in stepped geometric forms, the upper block cantilevering outward and bearing the subtle horizontal texture of wooden formwork patterns. The foreground presents a large open court surfaced with permeable grass pavers, a grid pattern where low grass grows through stone segments creating a carpet-like texture of alternating green and gray. Small ground-level lights cast warm pools of illumination across this surface. Multiple palm trees with tall slender trunks and feathery fronds frame both sides of the composition, their silhouettes dark against the twilight sky. The sky itself transitions from deep cerulean blue at the zenith through softer blue-violet tones toward the horizon, with wispy clouds catching the last ambient light in shades of pale blue and soft white.
It located in Portillo Beach, Las Terrenas. The housing of 850 square meters of construction has a high-end finish. The design is based on the integrity of the materials and how they blend into the Caribbean beach landscape: the natural gypsum floor, the unpolished travertine stone floor, coral stone and aluminum with wood finish, among others. The design design consists of a combination of different textures, elements and volumes. This manages to be balanced and with a good management of the materiality, being distinctive in its facades the concrete in its natural state.
