RICCA Sakura in a bar

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2017

This audio description presents an interior bar space dominated by an extraordinary ceiling installation. Scanning from top to bottom, the upper two-thirds of the composition features a dense suspended canopy of thousands of small petal-shaped elements in warm tones ranging from deep wine red through coral pink to metallic gold, creating the impression of standing beneath a flowering tree in full bloom. The individual elements catch light differently, some appearing matte rose while others sparkle with golden or copper reflections, the overall mass suggesting organic clusters and cascades that feel as though they might drift downward at any moment. Moving to the middle ground, the walls on both sides feature warm wood paneling in rich brown tones like polished walnut, with horizontal illuminated shelving displaying rows of bottles in amber, green, and clear glass, their contents glowing softly from backlighting that creates bands of warm luminosity. Below the shelving, additional display areas hold precisely arranged rows of wine glasses, their transparent forms catching and refracting light into subtle prismatic effects. The lower portion of the space features dark upholstered bar seating in charcoal tones arranged along both sides, with wooden counter surfaces warm as aged honey beneath. Small candles in clear glass holders create intimate pools of amber light at each seating position, their glow suggesting cozy warmth against the dramatic overhead display. The floor appears to be dark polished stone with subtle veining, reflecting fragments of the crimson ceiling installation. At the far end, a mirror multiplies the petal canopy into infinite regression, creating a sense of endless depth. The overall atmosphere suggests warmth, intimacy, and hushed contemplation, like entering a private grotto transformed by perpetual spring.

RICCA is a bar, located at Kagurazaka. Even now, there are Japanese traditional atmosphere and alley in this town. I created this design to express Japanese aesthetic sense. In Japan, there is cultural event is known as “Hanami”, which means “cherry blossom viewing”. This unique event is happened only in couples of week of early spring. Inspired by this moment, I designed this bar with beauty, glamorous, strength and fragility of Hanami.
