Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025
Approaching the visual field, one encounters a two-story residential structure situated within a landscaped garden setting, beginning orientation from the background sky realm where pale blue atmosphere with scattered white clouds extends across the upper portion, establishing open environmental context, moving forward into the middle ground architectural zone, the building itself occupies the central and right portions of the composition, presenting white exterior walls rising to meet dark rooflines, the structure demonstrates two distinct volumes, the left section features a lower roofline sloping in hipped configuration, while the right section rises taller with a gabled roof peak, both roof edges defined by dark charcoal trim that reads as crisp linear boundaries against the pale walls, the white facade surfaces possess a smooth matte finish suggesting the coolness of freshly plastered walls on an overcast morning, the temperature neither warm as sun-heated stucco nor cold as winter snow but rather neutral as cloud-diffused daylight on mineral surfaces, windows punctuate these white expanses as dark-framed geometric openings, most prominently on the left volume's upper level where a large window grouping consists of six vertical rectangular panes arranged in two columns, each pane outlined in thin black framing that creates a grid pattern, below this grouping on the ground level, a broad transparent opening reveals interior space, additional smaller rectangular windows appear on other wall surfaces, all framed in the same dark material creating consistent visual rhythm, moving into the foreground landscape zone occupying the lower third of the scene, one encounters layered vegetation beginning with burgundy-red leafed shrubs with the depth of aged wine or autumn foliage, their surfaces appearing soft and slightly yielding as fabric, interspersed with bright chartreuse green plants suggesting the freshness of new spring growth, feathery fern fronds extend upward at right with delicate texture like fine hair or soft brush bristles, a small olive tree with silver-green foliage sits in a dark cylindrical container at left, its leaves suggesting the dry papery texture of Mediterranean herbs, stone steps constructed from beige blocks with rough surfaces like sandstone or weathered limestone ascend through the center foreground, each block appearing solid and cool as stone warmed slightly by ambient daylight, these steps are surrounded by pale crushed gravel suggesting the crunch and give of loose stone underfoot, pathways of similar aggregate material in warm beige tones wind between planted areas, the overall lighting suggests soft diffused conditions as though filtered through light cloud cover, creating gentle illumination without sharp shadows, temperatures feeling moderate as a temperate spring or autumn afternoon, the scene conveys stillness, the implied quiet of suburban residential environments punctuated perhaps by birdsong or rustling leaves, the scale relationships indicate human habitation with the building rising perhaps twenty-five to thirty feet at its peak, windows sized for human viewing and passage, steps calibrated for comfortable ascent, the entire composition suggesting thoughtfully designed domestic space where architecture and landscape interweave to create dwelling environment.
This building is built in a place surrounded by farmland, so the cafe was created to make the most of the surrounding environment. They had to think of an architecture that would allow people to enjoy nature. To that end, they created a distinctive triangular indoor balcony space above the entrance, as well as many open atriums to create a sense of openness. They also designed a cafe that can be enjoyed in the midst of nature, blurring the relationship between indoors and outdoors with large windows and a terrace that leads to the outside.
