Single Wall Residence

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

A contemporary two-story residence photographed from the lawn presents itself as the primary subject of this architectural image, formatted in square dimensions with the building centered against an expansive sky. Scanning from bottom to top, the immediate foreground consists of a gently sloping lawn of vibrant grass, like fresh spring growth, with ornamental grasses in tan and gold tones creating soft textural accents at left of center. To the right foreground, a rectangular swimming pool extends horizontally, its water appearing as pale aquamarine with soft blue-green tones suggesting a refreshing coolness. A white pool deck surrounds the water, where white lounge furniture provides rest areas. The residence rises behind the pool terrace, presenting a symmetrical façade of two distinct horizontal levels. The ground floor features floor-to-ceiling glass panels at center, approximately one-third of the building width, flanked by rich rust-colored metal panels with warm sienna and burnt orange tones resembling autumn leaves or weathered copper. Through the glass, interior furnishings appear in neutral whites and warm wood tones. Slender round columns in light grey support the upper level, creating a shaded covered terrace. The upper story mirrors this arrangement with continuous glazing revealing interior spaces furnished with warm caramel-colored seating, again flanked by the rust-metal panels. A substantial flat roof extends outward beyond the glass line, its concrete mass in cool dove grey providing deep shade. The background landscape rises to the left as a forested hillside in deep green, while distant mountains appear in soft lavender-grey haze at right. The sky dominates the upper half of the composition, filled with dramatic streaking clouds in white and pale grey against soft blue, suggesting gentle atmospheric movement and creating diagonal energy above the calm horizontal architecture.

Structured by a single architectural gesture, an 80 meter long pressed bamboo wall, the Single Wall Residence achieves clarity through simplicity. This linear element organizes the program, separates uses, conceals services, and supports the suspended volume of bedrooms. The design dissolves into the tropical landscape, prioritizing openness and visual continuity. Material honesty, formal precision, and spatial fluidity converge to create an immersive, barrier free experience, where architecture becomes an extension of nature.
