Turandot Restaurant

Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025

Entering this dining environment, one encounters a sophisticated multi-level interior space extending from immediate foreground approximately fifteen feet deep to background architectural features, organized around a series of vertical columns and horizontal zones that create distinct spatial territories within a cohesive whole, the overall atmosphere characterized by warm golden illumination punctuated by cooler accent lighting and rich material contrasts between pale cream, deep slate blue, gleaming brass gold, and vibrant turquoise elements. Beginning in the immediate foreground at center-left, a curved banquette upholstered in ivory or cream-colored leather exhibits pronounced vertical channel tufting creating regular parallel ridges running from seat to back, the surface appearing soft and plush with subtle sheen suggesting fine leather or high-quality vinyl, this seating element wrapping in a gentle arc and paired with a low circular occasional table approximately two feet in diameter featuring a light cream stone or composite top with subtle veining and a cylindrical base in deep navy blue lacquer banded with narrow brass metallic trim, the table positioned directly before the banquette at comfortable reach height. Moving rightward across the foreground, additional seating appears including freestanding dining chairs upholstered in slate blue-gray fabric, these chairs featuring exposed tubular brass frames forming geometric rectangular profiles with the front legs, seat support, and back support all described by clean metallic lines suggesting mid-century modern influences, the brass appearing as brushed or satin finish catching warm light, beside these chairs sit additional circular tables echoing the cream stone tops and navy blue bases establishing visual rhythm. Anchoring the left third of the composition, a substantial rectangular column rises from floor to ceiling wrapped in creamy travertine-like marble showing subtle gray and gold veining in irregular organic patterns, the stone appearing cool and smooth with slight translucency under the warm lighting, approximately halfway up this column surface, three irregular organic forms in vibrant turquoise blue resembling polished agate cross-sections or geode interiors have been affixed, these mineral-like elements displaying concentric banding patterns in various shades of turquoise, teal, and deep blue with some showing dark navy centers and lighter aqua outer rings, their organic irregular shapes contrasting dramatically with the rectangular column geometry and pale neutral stone, suggesting raw geological specimens. Horizontal brass bands course across the walls at regular intervals creating strong linear graphic elements perhaps eight inches tall running continuously around the room perimeter, these metallic strips appearing as warm gold suggesting brass or bronze in brushed finish, within these horizontal bands, concealed linear LED light strips emit soft amber glow approximately 2800 Kelvin in color temperature, this warm illumination washing upward and downward across adjacent wall surfaces creating layered lighting effects. Suspended from the dark ceiling above, several pendant light fixtures descend on slender brass rods or cables, each fixture composed of a brass armature terminating in hand-blown glass globes, some globes appearing amber or honey-colored while others seem clear, the glass exhibiting slight irregularities and bubbles suggesting artisanal fabrication, these pendants positioned at varied heights creating visual interest and providing pools of warm illumination over dining surfaces below, the light emanating from within the glass diffusing softly with gentle specular highlights on the curved glass surfaces. The ceiling itself reads as charcoal gray or dark brown, possibly exposed concrete or painted surface with visible structural elements and mechanical systems creating industrial texture that contrasts with the refined finishes below, this darker ceiling receding visually and allowing the illuminated elements to command attention. In the middle ground beyond the foreground seating, the space opens into circulation paths between additional seating clusters, the floor appearing as large-format gray stone or porcelain tiles in matte finish providing neutral grounding, along the right wall another pale cream column appears with similar proportions to the left column, also adorned with turquoise mineral accents, between columns the wall surfaces continue the cream stone treatment with brass horizontal banding. Dominating the background at center, a large rectangular architectural feature appears backlit creating a luminous focal point, this element consists of a pale cream stone or composite panel approximately ten feet wide and six feet tall featuring an incised or low-relief portrait of a human face rendered in simplified linear style, the facial features including large expressive eyes, defined eyebrows, full lips, and flowing hair suggested through subtle line work and tonal variation, this figural artwork framed by substantial brass molding creating a picture-frame effect with stepped geometric profiles suggesting Art Deco detailing, flanking this central panel, geometric brass grillwork or screens in vertical linear patterns create visual rhythm and partial spatial division, the brass elements consistent in their warm golden tone and refined execution throughout. The overall spatial impression suggests progressive depth from intimate foreground seating through transitional circulation middle ground to monumental background focal feature, the layered arrangement creating visual complexity and spatial interest while maintaining functional clarity for dining and service circulation, the temperature of the environment reading as warm and intimate despite the substantial ceiling height, the combination of soft upholstery, warm metallic accents, gentle lighting, and the organic turquoise punctuation creating a sensory-rich atmosphere that balances geometric order with natural elements, refined elegance with bold accent color, and architectural structure with decorative embellishment designed to elevate the dining experience through careful attention to every visual and tactile detail.

The designer reimagined traditional Chinese style by creating a modern and expressive design for this two-level restaurant. The space is built on a play of volumes and perspectives, with visual accents that guide the eye and add dynamic energy. Brass pipes serve as a unifying motif throughout the interior. The goal was to achieve lightness, visual depth, and comfort, avoiding direct references while preserving the atmosphere. It’s not a typical ethnic approach, but a design statement inspired by China.
