Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025
Before you rises a contemporary residential building photographed from street level under clear daytime skies, its architectural composition organized as two vertical tower volumes flanking a recessed central section, all resting upon a horizontal ground-floor base, the overall structure reaching perhaps three to four stories in height and presenting a facade width of approximately twenty to twenty-five feet. Beginning with spatial orientation from left to right across the composition, the leftmost element comprises a slender tower clad in pale cream or off-white brick laid in horizontal courses creating subtle linear texture, this lighter volume extending upward with vertical emphasis and terminating at its peak in a dark cap or parapet element, the pale masonry surface suggesting a smooth, possibly glazed ceramic finish that catches ambient light with gentle luminosity, the color evoking fresh plaster, natural limestone, or warm porcelain, cool to the touch if one could reach it but warmed by sunlight, the fine horizontal joints between brick courses creating a delicate grid pattern across the surface. Moving rightward, the composition's center and right portions present a broader, more substantial volume wrapped in dark charcoal gray to near-black brick, also laid in horizontal running bond pattern but reading considerably darker in value, this masonry suggesting a matte, light-absorbent surface texture, perhaps unglazed clay or treated with flat pigmented coating, the color resembling weathered slate, deep shadow, or charcoal dust, cool and somber in temperature association. Punctuating this darker facade at irregular vertical intervals are five horizontal window openings, each appearing as a narrow rectangular slot perhaps six feet wide by one foot tall, glazed in reflective blue-green glass that captures and mirrors the sky above, these windows suggesting coolness like deep water or shaded ice, smooth and impenetrable to touch, arranged in a staggered pattern ascending the facade's height, the lowest positioned near what would be second-floor level, the uppermost near what appears to be fourth-floor height. Between the pale left tower and the dark right volume lies a recessed central section, set back perhaps three to four feet from the forward plane, also clad in the same dark brick, this shadowed bay creating depth and spatial layering, suggesting a cool, protected zone sheltered from direct sunlight. The ground floor extends across the full composition width as a horizontal plinth approximately eight to nine feet in height, clad in the same pale brick as the left tower, establishing visual continuity and providing a unifying base, this lighter ground level containing at its right side a dark rectangular opening partially occupied by a parked black automobile, suggesting vehicular entry or garage accommodation, the car's glossy paint reflecting ambient light, its presence providing scale reference indicating the building's residential domestic function. At the left edge of the ground floor sits a dark recessed entry portal, its shadowed depth suggesting a doorway threshold leading into interior spaces, flanked by slender vertical plantings appearing as bamboo or similar vegetation, these green elements introducing organic life and softness, the foliage suggesting the fresh verdant quality of new spring growth, rustling quietly in gentle breeze, bringing living texture against the geometric masonry planes. The sky occupying the composition's upper third and background presents as clear cerulean blue scattered with thin white cirrus clouds suggesting pleasant weather, warm sunlight falling from above without harsh shadows, the atmospheric quality suggesting late morning or early afternoon on a temperate day, the air feeling fresh and clear, perhaps carrying the ambient sounds of distant urban activity, passing vehicles, footsteps, or birdsong, the overall environmental impression suggesting quiet residential neighborhood removed from immediate commercial bustle. The architectural surfaces throughout suggest solidity and permanence, the brick masonry conveying weight, stability, and substantial construction, while the narrow window openings suggest controlled connection between sheltered interior spaces and exterior environment, the overall composition projecting an atmosphere of dignified privacy, domestic sanctuary, and thoughtful material craft.
