Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025
A contemporary private residence is presented in this architectural photograph, captured during the blue hour when the sky transitions from deep blue overhead to soft peachy tones near the horizon. Scanning from background to foreground, the uppermost portion shows sculptural white volumes with smooth curved surfaces rising against the evening sky, their forms suggesting flowing fabric or organic shells rendered in warm ivory stucco. Moving downward, the middle register presents vertical timber screens with closely spaced battens in honey-brown tones, approximately eight to ten feet in height, creating rhythmic patterns of light and shadow. The horizontal perimeter wall dominates the lower middle ground, constructed of natural stone with distinctive horizontal striations in cream and buff colors, the surface having a smooth yet subtly textured quality like layers of compressed earth or sedimentary rock. Warm amber downlighting washes this stone wall, creating pools of golden illumination that feel like afternoon sunlight even as blue twilight surrounds them. Three slender olive trees with silvery-green leaves stand before the illuminated wall section, their trunks dark against the glowing stone. At left, a bronze sculpture approximately human height depicts stacked organic forms suggesting a spine or twisted rope, its surface having the cool patina of aged metal. A single weathered boulder rests in the crushed limestone forecourt, its rough irregular surface contrasting with the geometric precision of the architecture. The ground transitions from smooth pale concrete in the immediate foreground through ivory gravel with a slightly rough, granular texture to the crushed stone surrounding the boulder. The overall atmosphere suggests stillness and serenity, the temperature cool as evening settles, the air dry and clear with perhaps the faint scent of olive trees and warm stone releasing the day's absorbed heat.
Zen House is a refined example of minimalist design, where light, water, and space shape a calm and cohesive living environment. A pool anchors the home's layout, complemented by the presence of an olive tree that brings a natural focal point. Thoughtful material choices and clean architectural lines support a sense of clarity and quiet. Every detail contributes to a sense of purposeful stillness, where nothing feels excessive and everything has its place. In this way, Zen House becomes a quiet refuge, attuned to both its inhabitants and its natural surroundings.
