Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025
Entering a contemporary residential interior captured in a single photographic frame, you encounter first the expansive horizontal plane of the floor stretching before you, composed of large-format tiles in cool mid-gray with smooth polished finish that creates mirror-like reflections, the surface feeling like it would be cool and smooth under bare feet like polished stone, extending from immediate foreground deep into the background and visually doubling the space through its reflective quality. To your left, occupying roughly the left quarter of the composition, rises a floor-to-ceiling architectural element in muted sage-gray, a solid wall mass punctured by rectangular voids creating display opportunities, the uppermost opening at approximately head height containing a shallow horizontal shelf displaying a pale cream or white ceramic bowl with organic curved form suggesting a compote or serving piece, and beside it several vertically aligned rectangular volumes that appear to be books with neutral spines, while below this a deeper shadow-box void extends downward creating dramatic vertical rhythm of solid and void, the recessed surfaces appearing to recede into deep shadow suggesting the texture would feel like smooth painted plaster slightly cool to touch. Moving rightward from this sculptural wall element stands a remarkable vertical partition extending from floor nearly to ceiling, composed of translucent reeded glass with fine parallel vertical striations creating a rippled texture visible as consistent linear pattern, the glass appearing milky and semi-opaque like frosted shower glass but with more structured texture, mounted within a slender metal frame in silver-gray or brushed aluminum visible as thin vertical lines at edges, this partition suspended from a ceiling-mounted track system allowing lateral sliding movement suggested by barn-door style hardware visible at top, the translucent panel fragmenting and softening the view of spaces beyond while allowing light to pass through creating gentle glow, the texture suggesting if touched it would feel like fine vertical ridges smooth and cool under fingertips. Beyond and through this translucent threshold, in the middle distance occupying the central zone of the composition, sits a dining ensemble arranged around a rectangular table in rich dark wood, the surface displaying prominent grain figure in warm reddish-brown tones suggesting walnut or similar hardwood, the wood appearing smooth and likely feeling satiny and slightly warm, measuring perhaps six feet in length and three feet wide, surrounded by dining chairs with curved backs and slim tapered legs in lighter mid-tone wood with upholstered seats in soft taupe or greige fabric that would feel like smooth cotton or linen, four chairs visible in the frame positioned to suggest intimate gathering around the table which holds minimal styling including what appears to be a small vessel and simple table setting. Suspended directly above this dining composition hangs the most visually striking element, a sculptural horizontal lighting fixture extending perhaps four feet in length, composed of three spherical glass globes in opalescent white like frosted light bulbs each perhaps eight inches in diameter, glowing with soft warm illumination suggesting the color temperature of candlelight or warm sunset, these spheres mounted on elegantly curved metal arms in warm brushed brass or bronze that sweep in graceful asymmetrical arcs reminiscent of tree branches, the metal appearing like it would feel smooth and slightly cool with soft satin texture, this chandelier hovering perhaps seven feet above the floor creating focal point of concentrated warm light against the cooler overall environment. The background, occupying the right third and deep center of the image, reveals built-in architectural features including a wall composed of a grid of translucent reeded glass panels identical in character to the freestanding partition, their regular rectangular modules creating ordered pattern like a large window divided into eight or more panes, each panel glowing with subtle diffused light from spaces or illumination beyond, creating luminous backdrop that appears to extend spatial depth indefinitely, these panels framed in horizontal white or pale gray mullions that feel architecturally crisp. In the right foreground appear glimpses of adjacent rooms or alcoves including what may be a framed artwork or mirror with thin metallic border, a clear glass vase holding delicate branches with small pink blossoms suggesting cherry or plum creating organic softness against the architectural geometry, and portions of built-in millwork or furniture in coordinated neutral tones. The ceiling plane visible above appears smooth and white or very pale gray with recessed linear details suggesting integrated lighting or architectural articulation, while at upper right a glimpse of what may be a kitchen appliance or millwork in darker gray provides tonal contrast. The overall lighting environment feels bright and evenly illuminated suggesting daytime with natural light supplemented by artificial sources, the warm glow of the brass chandelier providing concentrated warmth while the translucent glass panels transmit cooler diffused light, creating layered luminosity that feels neither harsh nor dim but balanced and welcoming like a comfortable interior on a bright cloudy day. The atmosphere suggests calm domestic quietude, a sense of order and intentionality in every placement, air that feels still and temperate neither warm nor cool, a space designed for daily rituals of dining and gathering conducted with mindful attention to beauty and function harmoniously integrated.
This project reinterprets North American neoclassical aesthetics within a contemporary Asian residence, balancing proportion, materiality, and cultural context. A refined 1 to 4 paneling system extends seamlessly into built in storage, while moisture resistant materials suit the climate of Taiwan. Curved ceiling treatments and layered lighting soften the space, guiding movement and enriching the spatial experience with subtle elegance.
