Serenity Multifunctional Cultural Venue

Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025

Enter a spacious reception hall where your first impression registers as one of calm openness and material warmth, the space extends horizontally before you with generous ceiling height suggesting a volume approximately four to five meters tall and perhaps eight to ten meters in visible width, creating a sense of welcoming expansiveness rather than intimate enclosure, beginning overhead, the entire ceiling plane comprises hundreds of parallel linear timber slats, each appearing roughly five to eight centimeters wide, rendered in medium brown tones that suggest natural wood with visible grain variation, these slats run horizontally from left to right across your view, spaced with narrow gaps of perhaps two to three centimeters between each member, creating a rhythmic linear texture overhead that suggests the warmth of sun-warmed wood or the pleasant tactile quality of smooth finished timber, the color can be imagined as the warm brown of aged honey, caramel, or the medium roast of coffee with cream, conveying natural warmth without excessive darkness, at the center of this ceiling system, perhaps one-third of the way from the right edge of the composition, the linear members descend in a stepped cascade formation, each successive slat dropping lower than the previous, creating a sculptural three-dimensional element that interrupts the otherwise flat ceiling plane, this stepped feature draws the eye upward and toward the right background of the space, beneath this timber canopy extends the floor surface in pale cool gray tones approaching the color of light fog, weathered concrete, or dove gray, its surface polished to a soft reflective finish that captures blurred mirror images of the reception counter and ceiling elements above, suggesting the smooth coolness of honed stone or polished resin flooring, the left third of the space opens dramatically to the exterior through floor-to-ceiling glass walls framed by slender black metal mullions, these transparent panels approximately four meters tall reveal an outdoor landscape with full green tree canopies in the bright verdant tones of healthy summer or spring foliage, suggesting the fresh green of new leaves or grass, beyond the trees appear glimpses of low residential buildings in warm cream or beige tones, the abundant natural light flooding through this glazing feels soft and diffused, lacking harsh shadows or bright hotspots, suggesting an overcast day or perhaps shaded northern exposure, this light creates a gentle even illumination throughout the space that would feel like standing outdoors on a cloudy but bright day, neither warm nor distinctly cool in temperature, at the right side of the composition stands a monumental vertical wall clad entirely in light-colored stone panels displaying dramatic dark veining, the primary stone surface appears in tones of warm white, ivory, or pale cream, comparable to vanilla ice cream or fresh linen, across this light ground run irregular branching veins in charcoal gray and deep graphite tones, these dark veins creating organic dendritic patterns like bare winter tree branches, river deltas viewed from above, or abstract ink calligraphy, the veining patterns suggest natural stone formation rather than manufactured pattern, embedded in this stone wall appear six circular recessed lights arranged in a horizontal row at upper right, each light glowing with warm amber or golden illumination comparable to candlelight or the warm glow of sunset, these fixtures creating gentle pools of light that graze downward across the stone surface, enhancing its three-dimensional texture and adding warmth that contrasts with the cooler natural daylight, in the foreground and extending toward the right stands the reception counter, a horizontal volume approximately one meter tall and perhaps three to four meters wide, its front face clad in textured gray panels in tones suggesting medium gray flannel, brushed pewter, or concrete, this surface appears matte and slightly textured, perhaps rough like fine linen weave or subtly striated like brushed metal, atop this gray base sits a lighter horizontal work surface in pale gray or off-white tones suggesting smooth polished stone, at the far right end of the counter appears a recessed opening or niche that glows with warm golden interior light, this amber glow suggesting the welcoming warmth of interior illumination like lamplight seen through a window on a winter evening, the overall atmosphere conveys professional calm, welcoming openness, and material quality, the space feels neither stark nor overly decorated, maintaining balance between formality appropriate to institutional settings and warmth appropriate to cultural venues that welcome diverse visitors, the integration of natural daylight, views to green landscape, warm timber surfaces, and strategic accent lighting creates a layered sensory environment that engages vision while suggesting comfortable temperature, the probable quiet hush of a carpeted or sound-absorbing space, and the subtle woody scent that might accompany natural timber installations.

This space merges a museum and digital library, embodying serenity and Sinology. The entrance features a marble texture wall and tall windows that create a play of light and shadow. Three volumes surround a central courtyard, distinguishing paths for visitors and researchers. Sunlit areas connect various spaces, while block-like walls create immersive environments. A staircase leads to the second floor with an audiovisual space and lounge. Stacked stone structures at the core reflect the collection's depth and connect both floors, with an open courtyard view fostering contemplation.
