Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025
A sculptural glass artwork approximately one foot in height presents an oval or elliptical composition oriented vertically, with the overall piece suggesting the scale of something one might cradle in both hands or display at eye level on a wall or pedestal. The work consists of two primary glass elements working in chromatic and formal relationship: an outer frame or vessel of deep saturated blue glass that reads as the color of night sky just after sunset or the rich blue of deep ocean water where light still penetrates, and an inner central element of pale opalescent white glass with the luminous quality of moonlight on water or the creamy translucence of alabaster. Beginning with the outer blue element, this forms a continuous elliptical or oval boundary approximately eight to ten inches tall and six to seven inches wide, with smooth curved walls that rise from the base and sweep around in an unbroken loop, creating a frame or theatrical proscenium that encloses the central composition. The blue glass possesses considerable depth of color, saturated and rich, cool in temperature, evoking the feeling of twilight or nocturnal atmosphere, and the material's transparency varies across its surface, with some areas appearing more deeply saturated and opaque while others, particularly where the curved walls catch direct light along the left edge, reveal brighter cyan or turquoise refractive qualities, creating a sense of internal luminosity and material complexity. At the composition's center, occupying the middle zone within the blue oval frame, stands a white opalescent glass form suggesting a stemmed goblet or chalice perhaps three to four inches tall, with a rounded bowl that widens slightly at mid-height before tapering toward its base. From this vessel's open top erupts a dramatic splash gesture frozen in glass, with fluid forms shooting upward and outward in multiple trajectories, the largest splash element curving gracefully upward and to the right in an arc reminiscent of liquid caught mid-flight, while smaller droplet forms punctuate the space around it. This white glass possesses a frosted or slightly matte translucency, softer in finish than the glossy blue surround, with light diffusing through it to create a gentle internal glow that makes the white appear luminous rather than simply reflective. The temperature of this white reads as neutral to slightly warm, like cream or ivory rather than stark cool white, creating a pleasing contrast with the cool blue surround. Moving to the right side of the composition, beyond the central splash gesture, a thin linear element in the same white glass extends diagonally, suggesting perhaps a utensil, wand, or abstract accent that balances the composition's asymmetrical splash gesture. The entire sculptural form rests against a neutral pale surface that serves as both support and backdrop, and cast to the right and below the sculpture, a soft shadow in cool gray-blue extends across this surface, its edges gently diffused rather than sharp, giving a sense of diffused natural light illuminating the scene from the upper left. The shadow's cool coloration echoes the blue of the vessel itself, reinforcing the nocturnal or aquatic atmospheric quality. The surface qualities throughout invite tactile imagination: the blue oval would feel smooth and cool under fingertips, like polished stone or still water's surface tension, while the white splash element might feel slightly warmer, its matte finish suggesting the texture of sea glass worn smooth by waves, or perhaps the subtle grain of fine porcelain. The overall composition creates a sense of arrested energy, dynamic motion frozen at its peak moment of exuberant release, inviting contemplation of celebration, abundance, the overflow of joy, and the artistic transformation of ephemeral gesture into permanent luminous presence.
It is a contemporary glass art piece that seamlessly merges historical and innovative elements. Drawing inspiration from antique goblets and the natural form of clouds, the design embodies the fusion of past craftsmanship with modern glassblowing techniques. The molten glass, flowing from these historical objects, symbolizes the continuation of tradition while embracing transformation. Through precise control of temperature and mold shaping, the piece captures intricate imprints, resulting in a striking visual representation of time, memory, and innovation.
