Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025
Scanning this architectural photograph from background to foreground, the upper portion presents a clear cerulean sky, warm like summer afternoon, occupying approximately one quarter of the image and establishing serene atmospheric context. Two substantial architectural volumes dominate the middle and upper registers, their tops curving in gentle wavelike undulations that flow from left to right, rising and falling like fabric caught in breeze or water captured mid-ripple. These upper masses are wrapped in vertical corrugated metal screening with warm bronze coloring, the material catching golden sunlight along raised ridges while receding into cooler shadow within the valleys, creating stripe-like patterning across the entire upper facade. Small circular perforations dot this metal surface in regular patterns, suggesting breathability and lightness despite the industrial material. Below these metallic volumes, a continuous horizontal band of smooth rendered wall in warm cream color, almost the tone of natural linen or pale sand, wraps around the building, its surface catching light softly and appearing smooth as polished plaster to the touch. This rendered zone features gently curved corners rather than sharp edges, the openings for two garage doors visible at left and right, their surfaces appearing smooth and pale. At center, an arched doorway creates the primary entry, its curved top echoing the waves above, rendered in the same warm cream tone. A mature tree with silvery-green leaves, appearing soft and feathery like olive foliage, stands just right of center, its organic branching form contrasting with the architectural geometries. The foreground presents a substantial wall constructed of irregular pale grey stone pieces fitted together in puzzle-like pattern, the surface appearing rough and cool as natural limestone, with green leafy plantings emerging from below.
Ripple House is a sculptural masterpiece that transforms space into a living artwork while overcoming the challenge of limited natural light common in attached dwellings. A custom designed screen by the architect, Sam Alawie, casts shifting light patterns, mimicking the fluid dance of water droplets as sunlight moves throughout the day. A central double height void floods the home with natural light, creating openness and connection between levels. More than a residence, Ripple House is an immersive experience where architecture, light, and nature harmonize in ever evolving experience.
