Villa OB Family House

Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025

Entering this double-height residential living space, one encounters a composition organized around a central white marble fireplace that anchors the room both visually and spatially. Beginning with an overview, the scene presents a soaring interior volume with exceptional vertical height, flooded with soft natural light filtering through floor-to-ceiling white drapery panels positioned along the right side of the space, creating an overall impression of luminous serenity and architectural refinement within a generous residential room. Scanning from background to foreground, the upper register reveals an angular white ceiling plane that slopes dramatically across the upper left portion of the composition, creating dynamic geometric interest and suggesting a mezzanine or upper gallery level that introduces spatial layering and vertical complexity. The rear wall, finished in smooth white plaster, rises to meet this ceiling plane and serves as backdrop for the room's commanding focal element, a marble fireplace surround executed in white stone with delicate grey veining that suggests the cool smoothness of polished Carrara or Statuario marble. The fireplace features a pronounced arched opening, the arch rendered in black material creating strong geometric contrast against the white stone surround, which is organized into classical paneled sections with vertical pilasters flanking the central opening and a substantial projecting mantel creating a horizontal ledge approximately one-third up the fireplace's total height. To either side of this marble centerpiece stand tall black storage cabinets, their surfaces featuring vertical fluting or reeding that creates rhythmic linear texture catching light and shadow, each cabinet appearing smooth and matte in finish with small square hardware elements in polished metal positioned at center, these dark rectilinear masses balancing the composition symmetrically while providing visual weight and chromatic contrast. Moving to the left side of the middle ground, an arched doorway framed in black metal with geometric grid divisions offers a sightline into an adjacent dining area, the doorway's curved top echoing the fireplace arch and creating architectural rhythm across the space. The floor throughout presents a herringbone pattern in natural timber, likely oak, exhibiting warm honey and amber tones that introduce organic warmth beneath the cooler white and black palette dominating vertical surfaces, the geometric chevron pattern creating directional energy and textural interest underfoot. In the immediate foreground, low-profile seating upholstered in white or cream linen occupies the bottom portion of the view, appearing soft as brushed cotton with slight textural nap, arranged around a rectilinear glass-topped coffee table that reflects light with cool transparent clarity. Upon this table rest carefully arranged objects including several large art books with visible page edges suggesting thick paper stock, a ceramic bowl or vessel in pale neutral tone, and a generous arrangement of white hydrangeas, their clustered blooms appearing soft and full as cotton balls, suggesting fresh garden fragrance and seasonal presence. To the right, the floor-to-ceiling drapery panels cascade in generous vertical folds, the fabric appearing lightweight and translucent like voile or sheer linen, diffusing the abundant daylight entering from beyond into soft ambient glow without harsh shadows, the fabric surface appearing smooth and slightly lustrous where light passes through. Throughout the space, lighting fixtures in black metal including dome-shaped pendants hanging at various heights and coordinating wall sconces provide layered illumination, their dark finish matching the cabinetry and door frames while their polished interior surfaces suggest warm metallic reflection when illuminated. The overall atmosphere suggests calm domestic sanctuary, a space designed for both formal reception and intimate family living, where classical architectural elements coexist with contemporary spatial openness, where hard polished surfaces balance soft textile elements, and where a restricted neutral palette creates visual harmony allowing individual material qualities and spatial relationships to register with enhanced clarity, inviting listeners to imagine moving through this carefully composed environment where each step would reveal new spatial relationships, material textures, and lighting conditions across a residence designed to accommodate both daily living and aesthetic contemplation.
