Serrated Transparency Office Building

Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025

A multi-story office building occupies the central and right two-thirds of the frame, its most distinctive feature being a transparent glass facade punctuated by regular vertical white serrations or fins that create a rhythmic sawtooth profile across the elevation, suggesting the texture might feel like a series of smooth vertical blades if one could run a hand across the surface at building scale, though of course the actual scale places these elements well beyond human touch, each fin perhaps two stories in height and projecting outward from the glass plane. Scanning from left to right across the composition, the left third contains the organic irregular forms of mature trees with spring or summer foliage in various green tones, some leaves appearing as cool deep emerald in shadow while others glow with warm translucent yellow-green where backlit by ambient daylight, the leafy canopy extending from upper left downward and partially framing the building view, the textural quality of the foliage suggesting softness and movement in contrast to the building's geometric stillness. The building itself rises six or seven visible levels, each floor clearly delineated by a thin white horizontal band marking the floor slab edges, these bands appearing smooth and crisp like stretched ribbons of paper or thin shelves extending across the facade, behind the continuous glazing the interior spaces reveal warmly lit workspaces with desks, office chairs, and human figures visible though not individually detailed at this distance, the interior lighting glowing with honey amber warmth suggesting artificial illumination active even during daylight hours, creating a welcoming quality like candlelight seen through frosted glass though here the glass remains clear rather than diffused. The vertical white columns rise uninterrupted through the full building height like slender tree trunks, their smooth surfaces appearing cool to the touch like polished stone or painted metal, spaced at regular intervals perhaps every ten to fifteen feet across the facade, providing visual rhythm and structural order, the serrated white fins positioned between and in front of these columns create additional layering, their angled profiles catching direct light on one face while the opposite face falls into relative shadow, producing a shimmering effect like pleated fabric or folded paper that shifts depending on viewing angle. The glass envelope itself exhibits subtle variation, at some sections appearing perfectly transparent like open air allowing full visibility of interior furnishings and activities, while at other sections becoming slightly reflective like still water, capturing and mirroring the cerulean blue of the clear sky above, this reflective quality suggesting the smooth coolness of a mirror surface. Moving down to the base of the building, the ground level appears partially recessed, creating a covered entry zone or colonnade where the building lifts off the ground plane, this threshold space sheltered from direct sun and rain, appearing as a cooler darker zone in contrast to the bright transparency of the upper floors, in the immediate foreground at ground level a landscaped arrival sequence includes low native shrubs and plantings with glossy green leaves that would feel waxy and substantial to the touch, several parked automobiles including a white sedan with smooth curved surfaces, a gray sedan, and a distinctive red compact car providing a warm accent note against the overall cool palette, four or five pedestrian figures in casual contemporary clothing suggest human scale and daily use, though at this distance they appear as simplified silhouettes rather than detailed portraits. The atmosphere overall suggests a clear temperate day with abundant natural light, the sky reading as even cerulean blue without visible clouds, the quality of light suggesting either morning or afternoon when the sun angle remains relatively high but not directly overhead, casting gentle shadows without harsh contrast, the overall environmental feeling suggests moderate temperature, light breeze implied by the casual dress of pedestrians, and the pleasant outdoor conditions of spring or summer in a temperate climate zone, the building appearing as a crisp geometric intervention within a verdant landscape setting, the transparency creating visual connection between the ordered interior workspace and the organic exterior environment, inviting the sense that boundaries between inside and outside have been minimized, that the building breathes and communicates with its surroundings rather than standing as an isolated sealed container.

The office building is located in Ellinikon with unobstructed sea views. The building outline introduces a trapeze, which expands over the site and addresses the prominent corner. The space is perceived as a field of forces where the delineated space is contested by the striated organization of the facade, navigated by the views towards the sea, the orientation of the sun, resulting in a subtle expression of the complex dynamics between them. The concept investigates the smooth and the striated in a broader field, with the varying degrees of transparency implied by the jagged main facade.
