Soki Kanazawa Hotel

Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025

Entering this hotel corridor means moving through a linear space where walls rise on both sides creating a clear pathway extending forward into the distance, the overall environment characterized by warm natural materials, soft diffused lighting, and a sense of ordered calm. Scanning from foreground to background, the floor beneath your feet would feel smooth and cool like polished stone, appearing as pale gray terrazzo with subtle aggregate texture, its surface even and reflective, catching soft light from above and the sides. Along the left wall, vertical wooden slats rise from floor to ceiling in rhythmic repetition, each slat perhaps two inches wide with narrow gaps between, the wood a warm blonde color like honey or pale oak, smooth to touch with visible fine grain running vertically, and these slats allow filtered daylight to pass through from beyond, creating delicate parallel shadows that stripe across the floor like bars of softer and brighter light alternating in gentle rhythm. Three low benches sit against this left screening at regular intervals, each bench simple in form with a flat rectangular seat in pale wood matching the wall slats, supported by slender legs that taper gently downward, their height perhaps sixteen inches, inviting brief rest, the wood surface smooth and warm, the benches' clean geometry echoing the minimalist discipline of the surrounding architecture. The right wall presents similar vertical wooden slat screening throughout, this side without interruption, the continuous rhythm of vertical battens creating a tactile sense of repetition and order, the wood appearing solid rather than translucent, the same warm blonde tone, suggesting you could run your hand along the surface and feel the regular ridges of each slat edge in steady succession. Above, the ceiling reads as a dark charcoal plane, flat and matte, hovering as a heavy horizontal lid that contains the vertical energy of the walls below, creating a sense of enclosure despite the corridor's openness, small recessed lights punctuating this dark surface at intervals, their glow soft and ambient, adding gentle illumination without harsh glare. Moving your attention forward into the middle distance, perhaps forty feet ahead, a reception desk emerges as a dark horizontal volume positioned against the back wall, its surface appearing smooth and matte, and behind this desk the wall glows with soft amber illumination, against which a delicate organic form appears in silhouette, branches or foliage suggesting a living tree or carefully arranged botanical element, introducing natural irregularity into the geometric discipline surrounding it, this organic accent providing visual destination and gentle focal point. The temperature of the space would feel moderate and comfortable, neither warm nor cool, the air still and quiet, the overall sensory impression one of tranquility and refinement, soft footsteps on smooth stone, the faint creak of wood, the subtle scent of natural timber, and the enveloping sense of moving through a threshold space designed to slow arrival and prepare contemplation.

Located in Fukuromachi, Kanazawa, a place where merchants once came and went and flourished, next to Omimachi Market, known as the kitchen of the city, the hotel combines traditional Japanese beauty with modern comfort, and aims to create a place that is loved by many people and contributes to the local community. By using local materials and working with local craftspeople, the project team aims to contribute to the local economy and a sustainable city, as well as providing guests with an authentic experience while creating opportunities for them to engage with the local culture.
