Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025
An interior residential space unfolds before you, organized as an open-plan environment combining dining and living functions within a single flowing volume, approximately rectangular in overall configuration with the longer axis extending from the foreground where you stand toward a glazed wall in the background, creating a sense of depth and progression through the space, the floor beneath your feet constructed of pale blonde wood planks, smooth and polished, cool to imagine touching, arranged in a linear pattern that runs perpendicular to your viewing direction, guiding movement into the depth of the room, overhead the ceiling presents a striking architectural feature, a series of substantial beams traversing from left to right across your field of vision, alternating between warm walnut-brown wood with visible grain suggesting solidity and warmth, and sleek matte charcoal-black linear elements that provide contemporary contrast, these beams creating a rhythmic pattern across the upper register punctuated by small recessed lighting fixtures that cast focused warm pools of light downward, illuminating specific zones below with a gentle amber glow reminiscent of late afternoon sunshine filtering into a sheltered space, scanning from right to left across the foreground approximately one-third of the composition, a dining area occupies the immediate right portion, centered on a substantial rectangular table with a surface of pale gray marble veined with delicate white striations, cool and smooth like polished stone, reflecting the overhead lighting with a subtle sheen, two dark wood dining chairs with curved backs and slim profiles are positioned at the near side of the table, their chocolate-brown finish echoing the walnut ceiling beams, upon the marble surface rest several objects including dark cylindrical vessels perhaps candles or small vases, and a sculptural arrangement of fresh greenery, slender branches with oval leaves in spring green and soft burgundy tones, organic and delicate, suggesting the texture of young foliage, soft to touch and slightly yielding, moving leftward from the dining zone into the middle ground, the space opens into a living area where a low-profile sofa upholstered in soft gray-beige fabric sits perpendicular to your viewing angle, its surface appearing plush and inviting like brushed velvet, scattered with light-colored cushions and a textured throw blanket in cream tones suggesting warmth and casual comfort, flanking the sofa are slender cylindrical floor lamps with black stems and simple shades, and to the right a tall sculptural arrangement of branches with chartreuse leaves rises from a dark vessel, introducing verticality and natural irregularity into the geometric order, to the left of the living area built-in cabinetry in warm taupe tones extends along the wall, smooth matte surfaces with minimal visible hardware suggesting concealed storage, a flat-screen television mounted within a recessed alcove glows softly, integrated seamlessly into the millwork, above this zone the ceiling reveals a large rectangular coffer recessed upward, creating additional architectural interest and vertical dimension, continuing into the background the space extends toward a floor-to-ceiling glazed wall approximately fifteen feet distant, translucent white vertical panel curtains diffusing the incoming natural daylight into a soft ambient glow, cool and even like an overcast sky, beyond this glazed threshold a balcony or terrace is visible with metal railings and hints of greenery suggesting exterior connection and fresh air, the overall illumination combines this cool diffused natural light from behind with the warmer focused artificial light from above, creating gentle contrast between the sun-washed background and the more intimately lit foreground and middle zones, the walls flanking the space present smooth matte surfaces in sandy beige tones, warm like sun-warmed plaster, unadorned except for subtle architectural detailing and the integration of lighting and millwork, the atmosphere suggests quietude and calm, the implied stillness of a private residence during a peaceful moment, the space feeling neither crowded nor empty but rather balanced and considered, designed for both small gatherings around the dining table and relaxed solo moments on the sofa, the temperature seeming moderate and comfortable, neither too warm nor too cool, the air still and settled, the materials throughout speaking to quality and care, the wood genuine and solid, the marble cool and substantial, the textiles soft and inviting, the overall impression being one of understated sophistication, a space that prioritizes livability and serenity over ostentation, inviting you to imagine moving through it, perhaps preparing a meal in the adjacent unseen kitchen, gathering friends around the marble table for conversation, sinking into the sofa with a book as daylight fades and the warm overhead lighting takes precedence, or simply pausing to appreciate the interplay of natural and crafted elements, the rhythm of beams overhead, the delicate beauty of the plant arrangements, the gentle gradation of light from the cool distance to the warm foreground, a thoughtfully composed domestic environment designed to support and enhance the rituals of everyday life.
In this project, the public space is framed by structural beams, with a three tiered ceiling design at its core. A central axis, formed by linear light boxes integrated with air conditioning grilles, evokes the imagery of mountains and rivers - translating the site's natural landscape into three dimensional interior lines. The layered depths within the elongated space naturally draw the eye toward the mountain ridges visible through the windows, connecting the indoors with the surrounding environment.
