Panlong Tiandi Mtpt Retail Store

Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025

The spatial experience unfolds as a contemporary retail interior characterized by warm natural materials and clean geometric organization, where extensive wood surfaces create an enveloping sense of organic warmth while maintaining modern simplicity and clarity. Beginning with orientation, the viewpoint positions us at approximate standing eye level looking into a medium-depth commercial space perhaps thirty to forty feet from front to visible back wall, the format presenting landscape orientation capturing lateral breadth of the environment. Scanning from top downward, the ceiling plane dominates the upper register, composed of natural wood planking or veneer in warm honey tones reminiscent of maple or light oak, the surface displaying pronounced linear grain running diagonally from upper left toward lower right, these parallel lines creating visual rhythm and directional movement, the wood appearing smooth with satin finish that catches diffused light without harsh glare, suggesting the tactile quality of fine furniture-grade timber warm to touch. Descending to the middle ground, substantial wooden structural beams or columns frame the space, one prominent vertical element positioned slightly right of center extending floor to ceiling like a smooth tree trunk perhaps two feet in diameter, its surface showing similar warm grain patterns, and from this supporting element hangs a distinctive conical light fixture in matte black metal, its inverted funnel shape perhaps two feet tall suggesting focused downward illumination though appearing unlit in this moment, the fixture's industrial geometry contrasting the organic wood yet sharing geometric clarity. At center slightly right stands the space's most distinctive element, a sculptural curved display column combining materials and functions: the form reads as cylindrical yet composed of separate elements, with a charcoal gray or black curved housing perhaps six feet tall wrapping protectively around a glowing emerald green screen or panel, this vivid green suggesting the fresh intensity of new spring leaves or tropical ocean shallows, the color luminous as if backlit creating striking contrast against surrounding neutrals, small white rectangular elements visible on the green surface suggesting product display or informational graphics, the overall form suggesting a graceful embrace or protective shell. Moving to the floor plane, cool gray surfaces in polished concrete or terrazzo spread across the space with subtle mottled texture like fine stone aggregate, the finish smooth as river-worn pebbles and reflective enough to catch soft glimmers of overhead lighting and window brightness. The background opens through extensive transparent glazing, large glass panels framed in dark metal mullions creating window walls that dissolve the interior boundary and invite exterior greenery inside visually, fresh green foliage visible beyond suggesting trees or planted landscape beds, the verdant life providing visual relief and natural connection, while glimpses through the transparent zones reveal additional retail areas with hanging garments in subdued tones, cream and navy fabrics suspended from wall-mounted systems. The lighting throughout feels gentle and welcoming, natural daylight filtering through the glazing and washing wooden surfaces in soft warmth suggesting mid-morning or afternoon sun, the overall illumination even without dramatic shadows, creating atmosphere of calm openness. Temperature-wise, the warm honey wood suggests coziness and organic comfort while the cool gray floor and exterior views provide tempering freshness, the emerald accent adding vital energy. The spatial quality conveys openness and ease, generous ceiling height creating breathing room overhead while the layered transparency and visible depth suggesting exploration and discovery, the overall environment inviting leisurely movement and comfortable browsing within a refined yet approachable contemporary retail setting.

This project is located in Panlong Tiandi, in the northeastern part of Xujing Town, Qingpu District, Shanghai. The space combines the profound cultural heritage of Panlong Ancient Town with the characteristics of Mtpt products, using materials, shapes, sounds, and light and shadow to blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, artificial and natural, with the theme of Touching Nature, allowing the beauty of nature to enter within the space and achieving a symbiotic fusion between architecture and landscape.
