Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025
The memorial labyrinth occupies the center-right portion of the composition as viewers face the scene, appearing as a dark elliptical maze structure approximately fifteen to twenty meters across at its widest point, constructed from what appears to be tightly woven natural fiber, perhaps willow branches, bamboo strips, or dark polymer material, arranged in horizontal courses creating low walls that rise perhaps thirty to forty centimeters above the surrounding lawn surface and define a series of concentric pathways that spiral inward toward an implied center point, the entire structure reading as charcoal gray to near-black in value, providing strong contrast against the vibrant green of the closely mown grass upon which it rests. Moving outward from this central labyrinth, the immediate foreground extending from the bottom edge upward presents as manicured lawn in fresh spring or summer green, the color warm and saturated like new growth in full sun, the grass cut short and even, creating a smooth carpet-like surface texture that would feel soft and slightly springy underfoot, cool to the touch, with the faint scent of cut grass and earth present in such cultivated outdoor spaces. The middle ground extending behind the labyrinth opens into additional lawn areas punctuated by mature deciduous trees whose trunks rise as vertical dark elements, perhaps one meter in diameter, with bark that would feel rough and furrowed, while their canopies spread in irregular organic masses of foliage rendered in deeper forest green and viridian tones, the leaves creating dappled patterns where sunlight filters through, suggesting the rustling sound of gentle breeze moving through branches and the cooler temperature of tree shade. To the left side of the composition stands a simple shelter structure with dark roof visible among trees, its presence suggesting visitor amenity, while additional trees scattered throughout the middle ground create natural framing and suggest this is a developed park or memorial garden setting rather than wild landscape. The background recedes into a tree line that marks the horizon, where taller evergreen and deciduous trees merge into softer-focused masses of deep green, their details less distinct, creating sense of depth and distance, while above this terrestrial register the sky opens across the upper two-thirds of the image in expansive cerulean blue, the color cool like winter sky but with the clarity of fair weather, transitioning from deeper cobalt overhead to paler azure approaching the horizon, scattered with delicate white cirrus clouds that stretch in wispy horizontal streaks suggesting high altitude, the clouds appearing soft as pulled cotton, and the overall lighting suggests midday with sun positioned high, casting gentle warmth on exposed surfaces, creating minimal shadows due to overhead position, and producing clear visibility with sharp details in foreground yielding to atmospheric softening in distance, the air feeling still and calm, temperature comfortable for outdoor contemplation, the entire scene emanating peaceful quiet broken perhaps only by birdsong, distant wind, or the soft footfalls of visitors walking the labyrinth's prescribed pathway in solitary meditation or small contemplative groups.
Situated within a Catholic martyrdom shrine, this contemplative space features a maze path that symbolizes the pilgrim's journey, offering a serene setting for reflection. The design integrates HPL and CNC-cut stainless steel, complemented by reclaimed wood benches and volcanic stone flooring, seamlessly blending traditional reverence with modern aesthetics. The use of durable materials ensures longevity, while the meticulous craftsmanship fosters a harmonious environment that honors the martyrs' legacy with both creativity and reverence.
