Hydro Bridge

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

This horizontal rectangular image presents a contemporary pedestrian bridge spanning a river, dominated by an extraordinary tensile canopy structure overhead. Scanning from top to bottom, the upper quarter reveals a dramatic sky of rich cerulean blue, the color of a clear summer afternoon, filled with billowing cumulus clouds in soft cream and white tones that suggest warmth and fair weather. Descending from the sky, a remarkable engineering structure commands attention: a mesh canopy resembling an inverted shallow bowl or sail, constructed from woven metallic fabric stretched between an armature of steel tubes radiating outward like the spokes of an organic wheel or the branches of a stylized tree. The steel tubes, finished in silver gray with a slight industrial sheen, extend at various angles, some nearly horizontal, others tilting upward, creating a complex three-dimensional lattice that appears simultaneously delicate and strong. The mesh fabric stretched between these members has a semi-transparent quality, allowing filtered light to pass through while casting intricate geometric shadows below. Beneath this canopy, a pedestrian walkway extends from the middle ground toward the distance, its surface composed of warm honey-colored timber planks running lengthwise, smooth as sanded driftwood underfoot. Metal railings line both sides, their vertical posts creating a rhythmic pattern. A single figure, rendered in ethereal white suggesting movement, walks along the deck, providing human scale; the deck appears wide enough for perhaps four people walking abreast. Below the bridge deck, concrete support pillars rise from dark flowing water that carries olive and brown reflections of the surrounding forest. To both left and right, dense vegetation frames the scene: masses of trees and shrubs in deep emerald, viridian, and sage green tones, their foliage lush and full, suggesting a humid subtropical climate. In the far background, a traditional arched stone bridge is barely visible through atmospheric haze, providing depth and historical counterpoint. The overall atmosphere suggests quiet contemplation, the gentle sound of flowing water, and filtered warmth beneath the protective canopy.

Hydro-Bridge is a versatile transportation hub spanning the Nakkhu River in Chyasikot, Nepal. It adapts to seasonal shifts, functioning as a pedestrian and light vehicle bridge in dry months and converting into a water storage system and secure campsite during the monsoon. Blending infrastructure with public space, the design prioritizes environmental resilience, sustainability, and community needs while harmonizing with the natural landscape.
