No Footprint Wood House Residential Architecture

Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2025

This rectangular horizontal photograph presents a double-height interior space within a residential structure constructed almost entirely of warm golden-brown wood. Scanning from background to foreground, the most distant elements visible through the louvered walls include glimpses of bright green tropical vegetation, palm fronds and broad-leafed plants suggesting a lush equatorial setting. The walls themselves command primary attention, consisting of floor-to-ceiling screens made from horizontal wooden slats arranged in panels that can apparently pivot or fold, creating a striped pattern of solid amber-toned wood alternating with narrow gaps that admit daylight and views. The wood throughout carries the warm temperature of honey or maple syrup, ranging from pale golden tones on the smooth floor to richer caramel and tawny hues in the wall screens and ceiling planks. Light enters diffusely from the right side and through the louvered facades, creating soft shadows between each horizontal batten that give the walls a gently corrugated texture one might imagine feeling like warm ridged surfaces beneath fingertips. The ceiling rises to considerable height, perhaps six or seven meters, finished in wide planks of similar warm timber running diagonally across the frame toward the upper left corner, where a dark ceiling fan with four blades hangs motionless. Along the left side, a mezzanine level is partially visible, its railing constructed from the same horizontal slat system. In the foreground center-right, a large rectangular dining table dominates the immediate space, its surface a dark charcoal gray suggesting stone or concrete, cool in contrast to the surrounding warmth. The table features distinctive angled leg supports of pale honey-colored wood. Two long matching wooden benches flank the table. Upon the tabletop, a rectangular wooden tray holds what appears to be a tea service arrangement including small vessels and utensils. The overall atmosphere conveys tranquil warmth, the implied sensation of tropical humidity tempered by cross-ventilation, and the subtle sounds of breeze moving through slatted screens.

The No Footprint Wood House is located along the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Its bioclimatic design integrates with the surrounding lush tropical forests and natural habitat. The project forms part of the multi-award winning No Footprint House series. Climate-responsive building variations are based on passive design strategies. Industrial building techniques and prefabricated components are combined with locally harvested and regenerative construction materials. The project promotes integral sustainability in terms of its social, economic, environmental and spatial performance.
