Iron A' Design Award Winner 2025
This two-story commercial building presents itself to viewers through a composition emphasizing transparency and material contrast, with dark charcoal-colored exterior surfaces forming the primary structural frame while floor-to-ceiling glass walls reveal interior spaces and activities. Beginning at the top of the structure, a horizontal band in matte charcoal finish extends across the facade width, appearing smooth and non-reflective like powder-coated metal with a texture that would feel cool and slightly grippy to touch, this dark band supporting three-dimensional white letters spelling out the facility identification, these letterforms projecting forward perhaps six inches from the background surface and appearing to be constructed from smooth rigid material with crisp edges. Moving down to the upper level, large glass panels divided by narrow vertical charcoal frames create a window wall system occupying most of the second-story facade, the glass surface showing reflections of the bright blue sky above scattered with fluffy white clouds that would feel soft and yielding if tangible, these reflected sky colors ranging from pale azure in the higher atmosphere to deeper cerulean blue in the mid-sky regions, while through these same windows glimpses of red and metallic elements suggest bicycles or similar wheeled vehicles positioned within the interior workspace that appears illuminated with cool white light like an overcast winter day. The ground level features a deeply recessed entrance area where full-height glass walls set back approximately eight feet from the building's front plane create a covered threshold zone, the floor visible through this transparent wall appearing smooth and light-colored like polished concrete with a cool gray tone that would feel hard and slightly cool underfoot, while suspended dramatically within this transparent ground-floor space a dark sculptural form suggests a bicycle frame or similar mechanical object, its sleek surfaces appearing as smooth as polished metal and creating a focal point that draws attention inward toward the building's functional purpose. To the left side of the main facade, white vertical elements create a rhythmic pattern like slender pillars or fins, their surfaces appearing smooth and their spacing regular like the strings of a harp, while to the right side another charcoal-finished wall section contains narrow horizontal bands that could be ventilation elements or window blinds, their corrugated appearance suggesting a texture that would feel like rigid plastic slats. The ground surface in front of the building consists of rectangular pavers in warm buff or taupe tones like dried clay or sandstone, their matte surface suggesting a slightly rough texture that would provide good traction, and the overall lighting suggests a bright daytime hour with sunshine filtered through partial cloud cover, creating illumination that would feel warm on exposed skin without harsh intensity, the absence of strong shadows indicating diffused atmospheric conditions that eliminate sharp contrasts and create even gentle visibility throughout the scene.
