Realm of Clouds Residential House

Iron A' Design Award Winner 2025

Imagine standing at street level on a gently curving road, smooth dark asphalt beneath your feet marked with painted yellow traffic lines that follow the curve to your left, before you rises a remarkable multi-story residential structure that appears to grow as much as it is built, reaching approximately four to five stories in height though the irregular massing makes exact counting difficult, the building occupies a corner lot with your viewpoint positioned slightly to the front and left of center, providing a three-quarter view of the primary facade, scanning from the foundation upward, the ground level presents a boundary wall approximately two to three meters tall composed of vertical elements alternating between pale concrete slabs with the slightly rough texture of board-formed construction, cool gray with subtle variations like weathered stone, and warmer honey-toned timber slats that might feel smooth and resinous under your fingers, this rhythmic pattern of hard mineral coolness and organic wood warmth creates a syncopated visual gateway, moving upward into the main building mass, the structure reveals itself as a series of stacked concrete boxes, each level slightly offset from the one below, creating dramatic cantilevered projections and recessed setbacks, the concrete surfaces throughout bear the distinctive texture of wooden formwork, as though the grain of lumber has been pressed and preserved into the stone-like hardness, you might run your hand along such surfaces and feel subtle ridges and valleys, occasional small circular depressions where formwork ties once held, the mineral smell of concrete dust perhaps lingering faintly, what transforms this assemblage from stark to extraordinary is the dense population of vegetation at every level, each terrace and setback supports soil deep enough for mature trees whose trunks might measure twenty to forty centimeters in diameter, branches spreading outward to create overlapping canopies, the foliage presents itself in varied tones, predominantly fresh greens ranging from the bright yellow-green of new spring growth, vibrant and luminous as young grass, through richer mid-range greens suggesting summer fullness with the depth of forest shade, to darker blue-greens receding like distant hills, scattered among this verdant profusion appear flowering specimens with masses of pink to magenta blossoms, warm and intense as sunset clouds, creating punctuations of floral color against the green matrix, the vegetation appears lush and healthy, leaves full-bodied rather than sparse, suggesting abundant water and careful cultivation, light falls across the composition from above and slightly behind the viewer's position, creating a gentle illumination that suggests late morning or early afternoon on a day with partial cloud cover, the shadows cast by the building's projecting volumes fall soft-edged rather than knife-sharp, creating zones of cool shade on the surfaces that face away from the sun while surfaces receiving direct light appear slightly warmed, catching a gentle glow, the sky behind reads as clear blue, cool and expansive like a summer morning, with occasional wispy white clouds stretching horizontally across the upper register, to the right and left edges of your view, additional trees frame the scene, their branches bare or sparsely leafed, suggesting either dormancy or a species with different seasonal timing, creating delicate linear tracery against the blue, these peripheral elements help establish that the building sits within a broader landscape context, the overall atmosphere suggests stillness and quiet, the kind of peaceful suspension you might feel in a well-tended garden, abundant plant life implies the rustling of leaves in gentle breeze, the possibility of birdsong, the fresh oxygen-rich quality of air filtered through extensive greenery, standing here you would experience visual complexity and organic vitality rising from structured geometric foundations, nature and architecture not opposing but interpenetrating, each enhancing the other.
