Iron A' Design Award Winner 2025

Approaching this large-scale installation designed for an aquatic institution, you encounter three vertical rectangular panels spanning approximately twelve to fifteen feet horizontally and rising about eight feet high, forming a continuous graphic environment at comfortable viewing height as you walk along the sidewalk, the leftmost panel presents an off-white or cream-colored background with the warm neutral tone similar to uncoated paper or lightly textured wall surface, against this light field appear large blue letterforms with distinctive striped patterns running through each character like the alternating bands on tropical fish or the light-and-shadow ripples sunlight casts on sand beneath shallow water, these letters spell words in a clean contemporary typeface without serifs, the blue ranging from deep saturated cobalt like deep ocean water to lighter sky blue like shallow tropical lagoons, creating subtle tonal variation within the striped pattern that feels organic and hand-crafted despite the precision of execution, moving to the center panel the background shifts dramatically to deep charcoal or near-black like the ocean at great depth or evening water, this dark field makes the composition's center feel weighty and anchored, dominating this central panel is a large circular photograph roughly four feet across positioned like a porthole or window into underwater realms, this circular image reveals a close-up view of what appears to be living coral or sea anemone tentacles captured in extraordinary detail with soft focus at the edges creating atmospheric depth, the colors within this circular photographic element glow with saturated pinks ranging from soft rose to vibrant magenta, deep purples from violet to eggplant, and touches of orange-pink like sunset reflected on water, these warm hues create striking temperature contrast against the surrounding cool blues, the organic subject matter appears almost to emit its own light suggesting either the natural fluorescence certain marine life exhibits or specialized underwater photography lighting, the curved biological forms within the circle feel soft and yielding like living tissue, tentacles or polyps creating rhythmic organic patterns that contrast beautifully with the geometric letterforms surrounding them, the rightmost panel returns to the light off-white background continuing the typographic system from the left panel, more blue striped letters in varying sizes creating dynamic visual rhythm, some letterforms tower over two feet tall while others measure perhaps six inches creating dramatic scale relationships, the stripe pattern within each letter maintains consistent direction and spacing whether the letter is large or small demonstrating technical precision, two people walk past the installation from left to right providing essential sense of scale, the figure on the left wears dark clothing possibly black top and dark pants while the figure on the right wears a lighter patterned or textured top with blue jeans and dark sneakers, both figures are captured mid-stride in relaxed walking postures suggesting this installation exists in an everyday pedestrian environment where people pass naturally rather than a formal gallery requiring contemplative stillness, the pavement beneath their feet appears as dark asphalt or concrete suggesting an urban sidewalk or plaza, above the installation you can glimpse weathered concrete or stone suggesting these panels are mounted against existing infrastructure perhaps a retaining wall or building foundation, the lighting across the entire scene feels soft and even without harsh shadows suggesting overcast daylight or the diffused illumination of a covered outdoor area, this gentle lighting allows the saturated blues and vibrant magentas to achieve full chromatic intensity, the overall impression combines the crisp precision of contemporary graphic design with the organic beauty of marine ecosystems, text becomes both informational and decorative, letterforms transform into abstract representations of the underwater world they describe, the installation invites both quick reading as you walk past and longer contemplation of how pattern and color can carry meaning beyond words themselves, creating an environmental experience that welcomes visitors to an aquatic institution through visual language that celebrates the beauty and wonder of ocean life.

As Southern California's largest aquarium, the Pacific Aquarium showcases best represents the Pacific Ocean's rich diversity. The rebranding improved legibility and memorability and simplified the name to The Pacific Aquarium. The design features fluid shapes and a custom font, evoking the ocean's dynamic nature and reinforcing the aquarium's mission of accessibility, education, and conservation through an adaptable, cohesive visual identity.
