Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

This architectural photograph presents a contemporary two-story residential building captured during the blue hour of evening twilight. The image is oriented in square format, with the building centered and occupying approximately two-thirds of the composition height. Scanning from bottom to top, a gray stone retaining wall spans the lower portion, constructed of rough-hewn rectangular blocks that would feel cool and substantial to the touch. Stone steps ascend through this wall at center-left, leading to the building entrance. A small illuminated pillar stands beside the steps, casting warm light. The ground level reveals a landscaped approach with young deciduous trees, their leaves fresh spring green, planted in prepared beds. The building facade presents two primary material conditions: the dominant surface is dark charcoal-gray corrugated metal with fine vertical ribbing that would feel ridged and cool beneath fingertips. Against this dark ground, bold ultramarine blue surfaces project forward, the color reminiscent of deep ocean water or lapis lazuli stone. A horizontal blue canopy extends across much of the facade at first-floor level. The main entrance features a vertical wooden door panel in warm honey-brown tones, illuminated by a downlight that creates a welcoming glow like afternoon sunlight filtered through amber glass. Above, the second floor features an elaborate arrangement of rectangular windows of varying sizes, their white frames contrasting against the blue volume. Warm amber light radiates from within each window, suggesting the golden warmth of interior spaces against the cool exterior. The sky above transitions from pale cerulean at the horizon to deeper cobalt blue at top, creating an atmosphere of peaceful evening calm. Neighboring buildings visible at left and right edges provide suburban residential context. The overall impression combines geometric boldness with domestic warmth.

This project creates a home that integrates nature into urban living. Designed by renowned architect Shin Takamatsu, the focus is on living harmoniously with the sky. The pentagonal plot features a central courtyard that connects all rooms, allowing residents to feel linked to the sky. A double Mobius strip design, with a staircase and hallway, creates a loop, offering flexibility for family activities. This design supports diverse scenarios, adapting to the changing needs of the residents.
