Village Hall Public Multifunctional Building

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

This landscape-format architectural photograph presents a large public building with a distinctive pyramidal roof structure, captured during the soft light of early evening. Beginning with the sky occupying the upper third of the image, gradual color transitions move from pale peach and warm cream near the horizon through delicate lavender and soft grey to deeper slate blue in the upper reaches, with scattered clouds catching warm light. The building commands the center of the composition, its most striking feature being an enormous canopy that slopes upward to a central peak, constructed from an intricate lattice of dark metal bars arranged in geometric patterns that create a web-like appearance, allowing the sky to show through the openings. This canopy extends outward dramatically on all sides, creating deep overhangs that would provide substantial shade. Beneath this protective roof, the building's lower mass is clad in panels of weathered steel that have developed a rich rust-orange color, warm like autumn leaves or terra cotta pottery. Vertical concrete pillars in cool grey support the canopy structure, their surfaces rough as unpolished stone. The ground level reveals stairways and terraced areas connecting different levels of the building. In the foreground, stretching horizontally across the lower portion of the image, runs a retaining wall constructed of rounded river stones in varied sizes and grey-beige tones, their surfaces smooth as water-worn pebbles. A small bare tree stands before this wall, its delicate branches reaching upward. Behind the building, gentle hillsides covered with winter-dormant vegetation in muted browns and greys slope toward the horizon. The overall atmosphere suggests peaceful quietude, the building appearing as a welcoming shelter within its natural setting, its warm material tones contrasting gently with the cool evening sky.

The building intentionally avoids the vernacular architectural style, and applies modern materials and structure. A big floating roof unifies the formal and informal spaces in a simple way, like a giant open umbrella. In order to achieve the floating and light feeling, the big steel roof not only needs to overcome the large cantilevers and spans, but also needs to keep member as slender as possible. With several structural innovations, a hybrid structure mimics umbrella cantilevers are formed.
