Belonging Residential

Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025

Entering this residential interior space, you first encounter the overwhelming sense of vertical expansion as the ceiling soars to perhaps twenty feet or more above the floor plane, creating an immediate impression of spatial grandeur and architectural ambition that establishes the environment as exceptional rather than typical domestic scale. Your spatial orientation begins with the foreground seating area positioned closest to your viewpoint, where a generously proportioned sectional sofa upholstered in fabric the color of pale dove gray or silver mist extends along the right side, its low-slung profile and plush cushioning suggesting the soft yielding comfort of down-filled seating, accompanied on the left by a coordinating armchair of similar tonal quality and upholstery character, both pieces resting upon an area rug featuring organic abstract patterns rendered in strokes of rich cobalt blue against cream background, the rug's brushwork design introducing gestural movement and chromatic vitality to the floor plane. Between these seating elements sits a circular coffee table with transparent glass top supported by a champagne-gold metallic frame that catches and reflects ambient light with the warm glow of polished brass, upon which rests a tall crystal vase containing an abundant arrangement of hydrangea blooms, some pure white and others touched with cool blue tones suggesting the temperature of morning sky or shallow ocean water, these fresh flowers introducing organic softness and natural fragrance to the composed interior. Moving your attention upward and throughout the middle ground, semi-transparent vertical partitions composed of slender black metal frames with glass or mirrored infill create layered spatial divisions without solid enclosure, these fragmented walls defining zones while maintaining visual connection across the interior, through which you glimpse a formal dining area with dark wood chairs arranged around a table beneath additional suspended lighting elements. The left wall presents an extensive mirror surface that doubles the perceived space and creates infinite visual recession, reflecting and multiplying every element within the room while introducing shimmering luminosity and spatial complexity. Dominating the right portion of the composition rises a monumental wall clad entirely in book-matched marble, its surface displaying dramatic veining patterns in shades ranging from cool steel gray through warm taupe to soft pearl white, these geological formations creating natural artwork across the towering vertical expanse, the stone's polished surface reflecting light with the smooth cool touch of honed mineral. Descending from the elevated ceiling plane throughout the upper register cascades an extraordinary sculptural lighting installation composed of numerous tubular elements in varying lengths, some finished in warm champagne-gold metal suggesting the glow of candlelight or sunset on brass, others rendered in translucent alabaster white evoking the luminosity of backlit porcelain or morning fog, these organic curving forms flowing downward in sinuous paths that suggest the movement of water falling, vines growing, or calligraphic gestures written in three-dimensional space, each tube element emitting gentle ambient illumination that washes the interior with diffused light quality suggesting overcast daylight or the even glow of well-designed artificial lighting that creates no harsh shadows but rather consistent gentle luminosity across all surfaces. The overall lighting feels neither warm nor cool but balanced and neutral, creating an atmosphere of calm clarity without dramatic contrast, as if the space exists in perpetual gentle afternoon light that flatters materials and establishes contemplative serenity. The textures you might imagine touching range from the highly polished coolness and hardness of marble and mirror surfaces smooth as glass, through the slight warmth and luster of brushed metal fixtures that would feel cool but not cold to the hand, to the soft yielding comfort of upholstery fabrics with the gentle resistance of quality linen or fine wool, and finally the delicate organic texture of fresh flower petals with their ephemeral softness and subtle natural moisture. The floor appears finished in large-format pale marble or porcelain tiles with minimal veining, their surface polished to reflectivity suggesting the smooth hardness of stone underfoot. The atmosphere suggests enclosed interior space with controlled climate and still air, the quiet implied by residential environments designed for privacy and contemplation rather than public circulation, perhaps carrying the faint fresh scent of white flowers from the hydrangea arrangement and the subtle barely-perceptible smell of quality materials including natural stone, fine textiles, and polished metals that characterize environments of refined material quality. The scale relationships indicate that the sectional sofa likely spans eight to ten feet in length, suggesting the furniture occupies perhaps one-quarter of the visible floor area, while the marble wall extends the full height and substantial width of the right wall plane, and the lighting installation descends from ceiling to perhaps eight or nine feet above floor level, leaving ample clearance above the inhabited zone while creating dramatic vertical presence that draws the eye upward and establishes the spatial grandeur that defines this exceptional residential interior environment designed for both aesthetic contemplation and comfortable daily living.

This home accommodates three generations, including an entrepreneur, adult children, and young grandchildren. Given its narrow layout and limited ceiling height, the challenge is to balance shared living with personal space while fostering a strong family bond through a refined aesthetic. The designer uses linear elements as a metaphor for the Eastern family's growth, extending from the first floor upward to define display, storage, and partitions. Mirrors amplify light and openness, subtly overcoming spatial constraints.
