Iron A' Design Award Winner 2025
Enter a spacious open-plan interior where raw architectural materials create a striking contemporary living environment, the composition organized from left to right across the picture plane with distinct spatial zones revealing themselves through careful scanning. Beginning at the left edge, a black metal industrial shelving unit rises vertically, its frame constructed of powder-coated steel with diagonal X-bracing forming bold geometric patterns, the shelves themselves appearing to be warm-toned natural wood or rich walnut stain, bearing a collection of objects including a smooth white spherical ceramic piece suggesting the weight and coolness of glazed porcelain on the middle shelf, alongside smaller dark sculptural forms and what appears to be vintage cameras or mechanical objects that would feel solid and precisely engineered in hand. Just below and forward in space sits a remarkable storage cabinet occupying the immediate foreground, its metal construction suggesting the cool smoothness of painted steel, the surface divided into multiple drawer compartments painted in saturated primary colors, a deep cobalt blue like a clear summer sky, a vibrant crimson red with the intensity of ripe cherries, a forest green suggesting deep pine shade, and a golden yellow like late afternoon sunlight, the whole composition topped with distressed typography reading fragments of text including the words visible at left, the lettering weathered and partially obscured as if by decades of handling, the metal surface studded with dome-headed rivets you could trace with fingertips, feeling each raised circle in regular patterns across the panels. Moving rightward and backward into the middle ground, a dark charcoal gray column or partition wall rises from floor to ceiling, its surface appearing smooth and cool like sealed concrete or painted gypsum, creating a strong vertical accent that divides the left and right portions of the room. The ceiling throughout presents exposed concrete with visible linear striations running horizontally, the texture suggesting slight roughness like fine-grit sandstone, the color a pale warm gray like overcast morning light, suspended from which hang black metal track lighting rails bearing adjustable spotlights directed strategically across the space. The right two-thirds of the composition opens to reveal a substantial brick wall surface in warm terracotta tones ranging from burnt orange to soft peachy pink like desert clay in afternoon sun, the individual bricks small and numerous with visible mortar joints creating a subtle grid pattern, some areas showing lighter plaster or concrete coverage while other sections reveal the full brick texture that would feel slightly rough and irregular under touch, small gaps and variations suggesting authentic weathering rather than pristine new construction. In the lower right foreground, a contemporary low-profile sofa upholstered in medium gray fabric that would feel soft and slightly nubby like natural linen sits parallel to the brick wall, draped casually with a pale olive throw suggesting the warmth and yielding softness of cotton or lightweight wool, the informal arrangement inviting relaxation and suggesting recent use. The flooring throughout appears to be wide planks of grayish wood or wood-effect material with subtle grain patterns and tonal variation suggesting the smooth coolness of sealed hardwood underfoot. The overall illumination feels gentle and diffused, suggesting natural daylight entering from unseen windows beyond the right edge, creating soft shadows and subtle gradations of light across the concrete ceiling and brick wall, the space filled with the quiet stillness of an unpopulated interior, a sense of calm openness and spatial breathing room, the temperature feeling neutral and comfortable, the atmosphere serene and contemplative, each material surface contributing distinct tactile and visual character to create a richly layered sensory environment balancing industrial robustness with domestic warmth and personal curation.
This project revitalizes a five-decade residence through structural reinforcement and adaptive reuse. Original red bricks and exposed concrete are preserved and enhanced with a custom steel system improving durability and spatial fluidity. Breathable materials address climate challenges while movable elements introduce flexibility. The design balances memory and function, transforming the house into a timeless living space that grows with its owners.
