Wedge House Residence

Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025

The scene presents a three-story contemporary residence ascending a hillside, viewed from ground level looking upward along the structure's length, establishing an overall impression of geometric clarity, material refinement, and bold structural gesture through a dramatically cantilevered upper volume, scanning from the lower foreground upward and across the composition, the immediate foreground at bottom left contains a weathered concrete retaining wall, approximately two feet visible height, textured as rough-cast concrete with granular surface feeling like coarse sandpaper if touched, colored in light gray with darker charcoal moisture staining creating irregular organic patterns, small green plants with delicate leaves emerge from joints between concrete blocks suggesting the yielding softness of living growth against hard mineral surface, moving upward from this base, the residence proper begins with its lowest level presenting as a recessed white rendered surface, feeling smooth as eggshell or fine plaster if one could touch it, this white reads as warm cream white like fresh linen or new paper, not stark cold white, vertical rectangular windows punctuate this base level appearing as dark voids suggesting the cool dimness of interior spaces beyond, the windows measure perhaps one-tenth the width of the wall surface, slender and rhythmic, progressing upward to the middle register occupying roughly the central third of the building's height, this level transforms dramatically through floor-to-ceiling transparent glazing that would feel smooth and cool as polished glass, through this transparent band one perceives interior space revealing a ceiling finished in natural wood with horizontal linear grain pattern suggesting the warm honey color of maple or light oak and the slight texture of wood grain, this visible interior depth creates spatial layering like looking into a transparent box, the glazing reflects fragments of surrounding trees and sky creating overlapping visual layers, moving upward to the uppermost level, white rendered surface returns feeling the same smooth matte texture as the base, a horizontal band of windows wraps this upper story positioned just below the roofline, these openings read as dark horizontal voids approximately one-twentieth the building height, above this, a bold cantilevered volume projects dramatically toward the viewer, spanning approximately one-third the building's width, this element appears clad in dark charcoal gray corrugated metal with vertical linear ribbing that would feel as regularly spaced ridges like narrow vertical slats, the metal suggests the cool smooth hardness of steel, this dark overhang creates a sheltered zone below casting gentle shadow on the transparent middle level, the roof surface above this cantilever reads as light colored likely matching the white render, to the right side of the composition, a mature deciduous tree occupies roughly one-fifth of the frame width, its foliage appears in various greens from spring-fresh lime yellow-green to deeper forest green suggesting the soft yielding quality of leaves, individual leaves show lanceolate shapes like elongated ovals with pointed tips, the tree trunk and branches would feel as rough textured bark, this organic form creates strong contrast to the geometric architectural volumes, at the upper left background, a neighboring building appears clad in dark charcoal horizontal siding suggesting the linear texture of lapped boards, behind and above all architectural elements, the sky occupies roughly the upper third of the composition, colored in clear cerulean blue like midday sky suggesting the cool infinite quality of open air with wispy white clouds adding subtle texture like brushed cotton, the overall lighting suggests bright natural daylight from slightly left creating gentle shadows that define form without harsh contrast, the atmosphere feels as crisp clear air with no haze, temperature suggesting pleasant moderate conditions neither hot nor cold, the transparent middle register and visible wood ceiling create implied warmth of inhabited domestic space while the geometric precision and material refinement suggest careful craft and architectural intention, the composition balances substantial built mass with lightness achieved through the floating cantilever and dissolving transparency, creating simultaneous impressions of shelter and openness, privacy and connection, geometric order and organic landscape integration.

This design tackles a challenging site: narrow, steep, and with strict building limits. To maximize space within a 40% coverage rule, a three story mix of wood and concrete was implemented. The innovative wedge shape places living areas on the view rich second floor, with diminishing lower levels to ease retaining wall pressure. This design balances regulations, space, and scenic integration.
