A contemporary single-story temple reception hall occupies the composition's center and right portions under a clear blue sky scattered with white clouds during late autumn or early winter daylight, the photograph captured from a slightly elevated viewpoint looking across a carefully designed entrance plaza toward the building's front and right side. The architectural structure features a distinctive two-part material composition beginning with a prominent gabled roof that spans roughly the upper third of the building height, this roof surface consists of horizontal corrugated metal or similar linear cladding running parallel to the ground in narrow closely-spaced ridges, the material appearing in dark charcoal gray to near-black tones that read as cool and contemporary with a subtle matte finish suggesting weather-resistant metal, the roof peaks at center and slopes downward symmetrically to either side creating strong diagonal lines that draw the eye across the composition. Below the dark roof, the building's main façade presents a contrasting treatment of vertical elements in warm medium-brown tones reminiscent of natural timber or stained wood, these vertical members stand closely together creating a rhythmic screening effect with narrow gaps between each element revealing dark shadow or interior depth beyond, the warm sienna and umber tones suggest wood aged to rich patina or perhaps contemporary wood-alternative materials finished to evoke traditional timber construction, this façade treatment occupies the middle register of the building elevation and provides textural richness and organic warmth balancing the roof's sleek industrial character. The building sits elevated on a foundation or platform system partially obscured but suggested by the lower shadows beneath the timber façade, in the immediate foreground a geometric hardscape composition unfolds across the lower half of the frame consisting of pale gray to off-white concrete or aggregate paving in large rectangular planes, these horizontal surfaces appear smooth with subtle texture suggesting fine aggregate or brushed concrete finish, the ground level changes in measured steps creating a gentle ascending progression from the lower left foreground toward the building entrance, crisp white-painted retaining walls or landscape elements define these level changes running horizontally across the composition and creating strong linear geometry that complements the architectural vocabulary. To the left of the main structure deciduous trees in late-season condition display bare branches interspersed with clusters of russet-brown and golden-ochre foliage suggesting autumn leaf retention or early winter, these mature trees with substantial trunk diameter and complex branching patterns provide organic contrast to the building's geometric clarity, their warm earth-tone remnant foliage echoing the timber façade coloration and creating visual connection between natural and built elements. Evergreen shrubs in deep saturated green tones cluster near the building foundation and along the left foreground providing year-round living color and softening the transition between hardscape and architecture, in the far left background a glimpse of adjacent traditional architecture appears featuring characteristic curved ceramic tile roofing in blue-gray tones suggesting the temple complex's established historical buildings providing context for this contemporary addition. The right portion of the frame shows the building's side elevation receding into middle-ground space revealing the structure's volumetric depth and suggesting additional functional zones beyond the primary façade, small rectangular openings punctuate the upper right façade hinting at clerestory windows or ventilation elements. The sky occupies approximately the upper third of the composition presenting graduated blue tones from deeper cerulean at upper frame edge to paler powder blue approaching the horizon, scattered white cumulus and cirrus cloud formations drift across providing atmospheric interest and suggesting fair weather conditions, the even diffused daylight creates soft illumination without harsh shadows suggesting either overcast intervals or sun positioned to provide indirect gentle light, surfaces appear evenly lit revealing material textures and color relationships clearly without dramatic contrast, the overall lighting suggests transparency and openness appropriate for architectural documentation. The camera position places viewers at respectful distance allowing comprehension of the building's proportions and site relationships while the slight elevation provides clear view over foreground level changes to the main façade, the composition balances architectural subject with contextual landscape creating understanding of how this contemporary structure inhabits its traditional sacred setting, the geometric clarity of built elements contrasts productively with organic irregularity of vegetation and the overall spatial arrangement suggests careful orchestration of approach sequence and threshold definition appropriate for a reception hall mediating between public and sacred realms.
The project was a reconstruction of the 140 years old reception hall, which was one of the facilities of the Buddhist temple Kouunji. The old reception hall had been loved by the local community for a long period; however, due to its severe damage over the years, it needed to go through reconstruction. The architect solved these issues by updating and harmonizing, also devising some systems to pass on the memory of local community to the next generation. As a result, not only did the new reception hall achieve a sense of nostalgia but also a presence in the historical context.
