In Between Octaves Japanese Ramen House

Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025

You are oriented within a contemporary restaurant interior captured in a straight-on architectural photograph that presents a complete view from dining area through service counter to the detailed overhead structure, the overall space measures perhaps forty feet wide and twenty feet deep with ceiling heights varying from approximately nine feet at the perimeter to fifteen feet at the center where an elaborate timber framework rises, beginning with the foreground, the lower third of the composition contains the dining area where you would find yourself seated, several low tables crafted from pale blond wood with visible linear grain patterns are arranged in rows, each table standing perhaps sixteen inches high and accompanied by simple backless stools with woven tatami-textured seat cushions in natural fiber tones, on each table surface rests a small navy blue ceramic dish, these tables occupy a flooring surface that reads as smooth polished concrete in a medium charcoal gray that feels cool and solid underfoot, moving into the middle ground your attention would naturally focus on the long preparation and service counter that spans nearly the full width of the space, this counter is constructed of the same honey-toned timber as the surrounding structure, warm as late afternoon sunlight, the wood grain showing subtle directional striping that suggests careful milling, the counter stands approximately forty inches high presenting an open view into the kitchen area beyond where you can observe a figure dressed in a black uniform engaged in food preparation, this person stands in a relaxed working posture with arms engaged in task, suggesting the focused concentration of culinary craft, behind this service zone rises a continuous wall surface tiled in elongated rectangular ceramic tiles, these tiles are arranged in a horizontal running bond pattern and glow with a soft cream color like fresh butter or warm ivory, providing a clean backdrop that would be easy to maintain in a working kitchen while contributing visual warmth, above the counter and suspended in the middle depth of the space hangs the most visually striking element, a collection of perhaps fifteen traditional Japanese paper lanterns called chochin, each approximately eighteen inches in diameter, these lanterns are constructed of white translucent paper stretched over bamboo ribbing creating a soft spherical or slightly oval form that diffuses light into a gentle ambient glow without harsh edges or shadows, each lantern surface bears bold calligraphic characters brushed in deep black ink, the characters varying across the lanterns suggesting different words or names, the lanterns hang at slightly varied heights creating a loose horizontal band of illuminated forms that seem to float in the middle space like a constellation of small moons, their warm light suggests the comfortable color temperature of candlelight or early evening sunshine around 3000 Kelvin, beyond and above this lantern array the architectural complexity increases dramatically, the upper half of the composition reveals an elaborate timber framework constructed of substantial beams and joinery, this overhead structure employs cylindrical columns rising vertically like tree trunks, each column perhaps eight inches in diameter and spaced at regular intervals of approximately six feet, these columns support horizontal beams that span across the space creating a pergola-like framework, the timber throughout maintains that consistent honey-amber tone that speaks of Japanese cypress or light oak, the wood surfaces appearing smooth and precisely finished, the geometric complexity of this overhead structure creates a rhythmic pattern of solid and void, the horizontal beams establishing strong parallel lines while the vertical columns punctuate at measured intervals, between and behind these structural elements the ceiling recedes into deep shadow, nearly black in the farthest depths where light does not penetrate, this darkness creates atmospheric mystery and makes the illuminated foreground feel more intimate by contrast, along the back wall above the tiled kitchen zone you can observe additional architectural detail including what appears to be wire mesh screening in a rectangular pattern, perhaps serving ventilation or aesthetic function, small rectangular voids in the overhead structure reveal glimpses of this screening, the overall lighting creates a warm enveloping atmosphere, the diffused glow from the paper lanterns combines with what must be discreet recessed or track lighting tucked into the overhead structure to illuminate the counter and preparation area below, ensuring adequate task lighting for food preparation while maintaining the intimate residential scale of the ambient lighting, shadows fall softly throughout, there are no harsh contrasts or dark pockets except in the intentional deep background where the ceiling dissolves into darkness creating a sense of expanded vertical space, the color palette throughout registers as deeply calming, the warm honey and amber tones of natural timber dominate perhaps seventy percent of visible surfaces, complemented by the creamy warmth of ceramic tile, the pure white luminosity of paper lanterns, measured accents of charcoal and black in flooring, calligraphy, and staff uniform, and the cool gray concrete floor that grounds everything, texturally the space offers rich variety, the smooth reflective quality of stainless steel kitchen equipment glimpsed behind the counter would feel cool and sleek to touch, the timber surfaces would offer the slight texture of wood grain and the warmth of a material that does not conduct heat away from your hand, the paper lanterns would appear delicate with their translucent skin showing the bamboo ribbing structure beneath, the woven seating surfaces would provide textured softness with slight give, and the concrete floor would feel solid and cool beneath your feet, the overall atmosphere suggests a space designed for quiet focus and contemplation, where the ritual of preparing and consuming nourishing food receives appropriate attention, the human scale of the seating and the enveloping quality of the overhead structure create a sense of shelter and intimacy despite the generous ceiling height and open plan, you could imagine the gentle sounds of this environment, the quiet conversation of diners, the subtle kitchen sounds of preparation, perhaps water simmering and ingredients being assembled, the soft rustle of movement through the space, and an overall sense of calm purposeful activity within a carefully composed setting.

This is a design project that integrates oriental elements into a westernized shopping mall. The overall space color system is mainly white and wood grain. An array of hand written calligraphy lanterns is used to frame the outer kitchen and dining areas like a musical score. The ramen chefs cook with the spirit of Isshokenmei. From the moment they queue up to the end of their meal, the guests all show their love for ramen and Tsukemen, just like a beautiful melody resounding in the space. Notes continuously perform the contemporary Japanese space with sound tracks between the spatial scores.
