A grand interior space unfolds before you, organized around a spectacular ceiling structure that serves as the defining architectural feature. Beginning overhead at center, dozens of long curved wooden elements radiate outward like the ribs of a giant fan or the spreading fronds of a palm leaf, colored in warm tones ranging from honey gold to amber brown, each element gently curving as it extends toward the edges of the space. These wooden fins create a sense of shelter and enclosure despite the vast scale of the hall. Moving your attention downward, the floor presents a smooth polished surface in pale cream and soft beige tones, cool and reflective like a calm pool, reflecting the warm ceiling above. Two substantial cylindrical columns in burnished gold stand at intervals, their smooth metallic surfaces catching light and providing vertical punctuation within the horizontal expanse. Along the left side of the space, planted areas introduce fresh green vegetation in various heights and textures, from broad-leafed tropical plants to delicate ornamental grasses, creating moments of organic softness against the architectural precision. Check-in counters and service stations in warm wood tones and cream finishes populate the middle ground, their curved forms echoing the organic language of the ceiling. The far end of the space opens through floor-to-ceiling glass windows revealing green landscape beyond, allowing natural daylight to flood inward and creating a sense of connection to the outdoor environment. A single figure walks across the right portion of the floor, their slight motion blur suggesting the continuous flow of travelers through this welcoming threshold space. The overall atmosphere feels warm, calm, and expansive, like standing beneath a protective natural canopy.
The design team completely redesigned an existing terminal building, Terminal 2 of Singapore's internationally renowned Changi Airport, comprising 120000 square meters across three levels. This newly renovated terminal focuses on traveler experiences and connections to the earth's elements and has provided Singapore with a new 21st century gateway to the Garden City. The project was designed as a journey across an indoor landscape encompassing minerals, water features, and lush vegetation in various forms and densities.
