Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2024
The image presents a view of a commercial storefront for a floral specialist, looking directly at a large transparent glass window and door system that forms the shop's street-facing facade, positioned at approximately eye level as if standing on the pedestrian walkway about ten feet away, the overall impression combines contemporary graphic design intervention with traditional architectural setting and abundant natural floral elements creating a layered, welcoming composition, beginning with the spatial organization from nearest to farthest elements, in the immediate foreground at ground level, several potted plants rest on what appears to be dark pavement or a low platform, most prominently featuring vivid magenta or hot pink flowering plants with multiple blooms clustered together, their petals appearing soft and slightly ruffled, nearby sit cream or pale yellow ranunculus with their characteristic layered, rose-like petals, and various green foliage plants providing textural variety, these foreground elements occupy roughly the bottom fifth of the view and establish warm, saturated color notes, a small wooden folding chair in weathered natural wood tones appears at left, its slatted construction suggesting outdoor café furniture, moving to the middle ground, the large storefront window dominates the composition, its glass surface showing both transparency allowing views into the interior and reflectivity capturing environmental light and architectural details, most prominently, a bold chartreuse or neon yellow-green graphic line serpentines across the glass in an organic, flowing S-curve or stem-like configuration, this luminous green line appears to glow with particular intensity, whether through fluorescent paint, vinyl application, or material properties that catch and reflect light, integrated with this linear element are white sans-serif letterforms spelling "WIM VAN ASSEM" in larger capitals and "bloembinderij" in smaller lowercase, the text appearing crisp and contemporary against the glass, through the transparent glazing, the shop's interior reveals warm golden-amber lighting at approximately the color temperature of tungsten bulbs, creating a cozy invitational glow, various golden or brass-toned decorative vessels and vases appear in the window display including rounded gourd-like forms and a pale striped spherical object suggesting a decorative pumpkin or gourd, suspended from above, two spherical sculptures constructed from what appears to be dried branches or organic material hang at different heights, their skeletal spherical forms creating interesting three-dimensional texture, deeper in the interior, the suggestion of a living tree with green foliage can be glimpsed, along with ambient warm light from unseen sources, beyond the storefront, architectural context becomes visible, the adjacent building features traditional masonry construction with aged red-orange brick laid in regular horizontal courses, the bricks showing subtle tonal variation suggesting weathered age, this neighboring facade includes windows with dark mullions and a cream or pale yellow painted wood trim, creating classical proportions and traditional character, in the upper right, a wall-mounted lantern-style light fixture in dark metal with a pale amber glass panel extends from the facade, above this, a sign reading "ROOTLING" appears in white lettering against a dark ground, and architectural details include decorative white sculptural elements suggesting carved ornament between upper windows, the sky or upper background registers as pale gray-blue suggesting overcast conditions or the cool light of architectural shadow, the atmospheric quality throughout feels soft and diffused without harsh directional shadows, allowing colors to read clearly without extreme contrast, temperature-wise, the environment suggests comfortable moderate conditions, perhaps spring or early autumn given the flowering plants and mixed seasonal character, the cool exterior architecture contrasts pleasantly with the warm inviting interior glow, creating thermal variety that registers visually as an invitation to step from the cooler public street into the warmer commercial interior, texturally, multiple surface qualities coexist including the utterly smooth plane of the glass with its reflective and transparent dual nature, the rough granular quality of the aged brick with its modular construction and mortar joints, the glossy ceramic or glazed surfaces of the golden vessels suggesting smooth coolness to the touch, the organic complex textures of living flowers with their delicate petal surfaces and varied leaf structures ranging from broad and waxy to narrow and papery, the weathered wood grain of the chair suggesting dry warmth and slight roughness, and the skeletal branching of the suspended spherical sculptures suggesting brittle dried plant material, the overall spatial depth extends from the immediate foreground plantings approximately two feet from the viewer back through multiple planes—the pedestrian threshold, the glass plane perhaps eight feet distant, the interior space extending back another ten or fifteen feet, and the architectural backdrop providing final contextual grounding, this layered spatial construction allows the eye to move through distinct zones while maintaining coherent unified composition.
The designers created a new identity for Wim van Assem, a celebrated North Holland florist, in honor of his 40th anniversary. The goal was an identity that would summarize his vibrant, progressive creative floral art. The new design is situated on the large windows in the old historic building, with dynamic ribbons that reflect Van Assem's energetic, free spirited style.
