Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2024

Entering this architectural interior designed by Masato Kure, listeners encounter a vast corridor-like space constructed entirely from pale honey-colored wood that extends from the floor beneath their feet up the walls on both sides and continues into the distant background. The sensation is one of standing within a warm wooden vessel, with smooth milled maple surfaces radiating gentle golden tones in every direction. Scanning from the immediate foreground, broad horizontal steps descend gently forward like an amphitheater, each tread approximately knee-height deep, constructed from the same pale wood and suitable for sitting upon comfortably while browsing books. These stepped platforms continue forward perhaps twenty meters before meeting an illuminated central opening in the distance. Rising on both the left and right sides, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves climb perhaps four meters high, organized in precise rectangular compartments resembling a honeycomb grid where each cell measures approximately forty centimeters square. Hundreds of books fill these compartments, their spines presenting varied colors including coral pink, sky blue, forest green, and deep red, creating rhythmic color accents against the predominantly cream-colored wood background. Soft warm light glows from within each shelf compartment, emanating from concealed sources behind the books, transforming the entire shelving structure into a luminous wall that seems to generate its own gentle radiance like a lantern made of literature. On the left side, several rectangular openings interrupt the bookshelves revealing panels of deep emerald green living moss, their organic fuzzy texture contrasting sharply with the smooth geometric wood surfaces, introducing a sensation of damp forest coolness into the otherwise warm environment. The ceiling above reveals exposed industrial infrastructure painted charcoal gray, with metal grid structures and mechanical systems visible, creating temperature contrast between the industrial upper zone and the warm wooden inhabited zone below. Looking straight ahead toward the vanishing point, the symmetrical walls converge toward a bright rectangular opening where additional bookshelves and soft illumination suggest the space continues indefinitely into luminous warmth. The overall atmosphere feels hushed and contemplative, like entering a sanctuary where time slows and the accumulated wisdom of countless books awaits patient discovery.

The bookstore represents Ningxia's cultural blend with its elegant design and iconic mid-air crossing bookshelves, reflecting diverse knowledge and interactions. In a high-ceilinged space, these shelves foster a dynamic ambiance, engaging visitors in a nexus of ideas. It transcends being just a book space, evolving into a lively intersection for literature, people, and cultures, thus nurturing a 'vibrant community' that encourages knowledge and cultural exchange.
