Fashionable Guan Gong Stage Wear

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2024

Scanning from background to foreground, this photograph presents a male figure wearing elaborate ceremonial costume positioned against a softly blurred coastal landscape. The distant background suggests water meeting sky in pale blue-gray tones like morning fog over a calm sea, with an indistinct sandy shoreline visible at left. The figure stands in three-quarter view, his body angled slightly toward the right while his gaze meets the viewer directly with calm, composed expression. Beginning at the crown, an extraordinary headdress rises approximately one-third the total image height, constructed from multiple materials creating rich tactile variety. Golden wirework forms intricate lattice patterns feeling delicate as filigree jewelry, warm as afternoon sunlight on metal. Two curved horn-like structures in deep blue-black rise from either side, smooth as polished stone, arcing gracefully upward then curving back. Cascading from this framework, beaded strands in coral pink and deep burgundy hang like strings of precious gems, suggesting the gentle weight and cool smoothness of glass or stone beads. Jewel accents in turquoise, ruby red, and amber punctuate the golden framework. Moving downward, golden twisted cords descend from the headdress past the shoulders, their texture rope-like and substantial. The shoulders display structured armor-like construction covered in deep green-teal fabric with silver scrolling embroidery suggesting clouds or waves, cool and smooth as silk brocade. At the right shoulder, vibrant embroidery depicts a creature in turquoise, coral, yellow, and crimson, the needlework raised and dimensional. The main robe in deep emerald green features allover silver embroidered patterns creating optical shimmer, the fabric appearing heavy and luxurious as fine damask. At the waist, a golden textured sash provides warm contrast. Extending from the right shoulder, a deep navy cape of sheer organza billows outward, translucent and light as evening mist, its edges softening into the atmospheric background. The overall impression conveys ceremonial grandeur, the costume transforming its wearer into a figure of legendary authority and cultural significance.

Drawing inspiration from the attire of Guan Gong, the deity worshipped at the Puji Temple in Daxi, Taiwan, boasting over a century of intangible cultural heritage. This work challenges the representation of Eastern deity culture through Western three-dimensional tailoring. Simultaneously, it employs digital algorithms to explore the application of textile technology in traditional hand-embroidered works, aiming to reduce weight and enhance durability. Main techniques embroidered fabric labels, embroidery, and the application of mixed media in ethnic stage wear design.
