Golden A' Design Award Winner 2024
Scanning this square-format image from background to foreground, listeners encounter first a vast industrial interior rendered in cool tones of steel blue and slate gray, suggesting the inside of a large warehouse or converted factory space with rough concrete walls rising to considerable height. Dominating the back wall, a large dark fabric backdrop hangs from above, its surface approximately four meters wide and similarly tall, made of what appears to be black or very dark gray material with a slightly reflective sheen. Upon this backdrop, luminous white characters glow softly—the number twenty and additional symbols rendered in what appears to be frost or ice particles, their edges diffused and ghostly like breath frozen on glass in winter. Moving forward into the middle ground, a translucent ice block stands at center, roughly the size of a small refrigerator, its surface catching and bending light so that it glows from within like a lantern made of frozen water. The ice displays the characteristic cloudy-clear variations and internal fracture patterns of naturally frozen blocks, cool to imagine touching, slick and yielding under warmth. To the left foreground, a robotic arm extends toward this ice sculpture, its articulated segments wrapped in a vivid chartreuse covering—a warm, electric yellow-green like new spring leaves backlit by sun—that contrasts dramatically with the surrounding cool environment. This mechanical limb bends at joints suggesting elbow and wrist, its gripper attachment positioned near the ice surface, connected by cables and hoses that trail to equipment at frame left. The floor throughout consists of dark wet concrete, its surface pooled with water that creates mirror-like reflections of the glowing elements above, doubling the light sources and extending depth. The overall atmosphere feels hushed and ceremonial, cool and damp, like standing in a refrigerated chapel where technology performs ritualized acts of creation.
A slowly melting sculpture performance, where an industrial robot carves a large ice block to a computational lens that refracts the spotlight to graphics on the wall, spelling plus two degree celsius, an ominous warning of global temperature rise. The artwork juxtaposes the high tech optimism with transient global challenges that know no bounds. The intervention only speeds up the process.
