Silver A' Design Award Winner 2024
This detailed illustration in printmaking style presents a horizontal rectangular format rendered entirely in deep indigo blue against a cream-white background, creating an effect similar to traditional blue-and-white ceramics. Scanning from background to foreground, the composition begins with a magnificent multi-tiered architectural structure positioned upper center, its many levels of windows and terraces suggesting a grand palace or monastery built upon ascending hillside foundations. Horizontal wavy lines create an atmospheric sky effect suggesting thin mountain air and distant clouds. Four large cosmos flowers with eight delicate petals each anchor the four corners of the composition, their centers featuring detailed circular patterns. Moving into the middle ground, on the left side, a large ornamental bird—possibly a peacock or golden pheasant—displays elaborate plumage rendered through countless fine lines suggesting individual feathers in overlapping scalloped patterns; its eye appears alert and its head turns slightly rightward. On the right side of the middle ground stands a magnificent yak, its thick woolly coat translated into thousands of fine parallel curved strokes creating a sense of dense, warm fur; curved horns frame its gentle face. The central foreground features a ceremonial mask with prominent bulging eyes, a wide nose, and an open mouth revealing teeth; flame-like decorative elements crown its head, and ornate scrollwork surrounds the face. Scattered throughout the composition are smaller figures including what appears to be a guardian figure at lower right holding implements, plus various botanical elements: lotus flowers, wheat or barley stalks, small blossoms, and leafy vegetation filling virtually every available space. The overall impression feels like warm wool, carved wood, and mountain flowers—dense, intricate, spiritually resonant, and abundantly alive with celebratory natural imagery.
