Benjakitti Forest Park

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2024

This aerial photograph presents a sweeping view of an expansive urban park featuring an intricate wetland landscape system, captured from directly above looking toward a distant city skyline. Beginning with orientation, the image format is square, showing approximately equal portions of developed parkland in the foreground and middle ground, with urban towers filling the upper third against a pale sky illuminated by setting sun. The dominant impression is one of lush green vegetation interwoven with dark reflective water surfaces, all bathed in warm golden light. Scanning from foreground to background, the lower portion reveals a complex system of angular boardwalk pathways, rendered in pale grey-white, creating zigzag patterns as they traverse dark water channels. These pathways feel crisp and geometric, like folded paper ribbons laid across the landscape. The water beneath appears dark and mirror-like, suggesting cool depth and stillness. Rising from the water surface throughout the middle portion, numerous rounded mounds of vegetation create an archipelago effect, each island covered in dense foliage ranging from deep forest green like summer ferns to lighter yellow-green suggesting sun-touched new growth. These organic dome shapes contrast pleasingly with the angular pathways, creating a rhythm of soft against crisp, curved against straight. Moving toward the left-center, a gentle bowl-shaped amphitheater with terraced seating steps descends toward a circular lawn, suggesting a gathering space that would feel like sitting in a gentle embrace of the earth. The grass here appears warm yellow-green, like dried wheat touched by afternoon sun. Beyond this structured area, mature trees with full canopies create a transitional zone, their forms softer and more varied than the manicured mounds below. The background reveals a dense urban skyline, towers rendered as blue-grey silhouettes, their hard vertical forms softened by atmospheric haze. Between buildings, the sun descends, creating a brilliant golden focal point that radiates warmth across the entire scene like honey poured across the landscape.

Benjakitti Park is located on the site of a disused tobacco factory in central Bangkok. The park's design incorporates wetland and forest ecosystems that deliver services including urban flood management, purification of polluted canal waters, and habitat for native plants and wildlife. The boardwalks and skywalks that crisscross the park are designed to immerse visitors in nature and to encourage them to reflect upon how humans and nature might live in harmony. The designers’ ambition is for the park to demonstrate the potential for nature-based approaches to urban sustainability.
