Golden A' Design Award Winner 2024
Scanning from background to foreground through this interior environment, listeners will encounter a retail space dominated by a massive sculptural wooden installation that commands the full height and much of the volume of the room, beginning at the rear, a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows reveals an outdoor scene of mature trees with fresh green summer foliage, their leaves catching diffused daylight that streams into the interior, this natural backdrop provides context for understanding the nature-inspired design within, moving forward into the middle ground, the eye encounters the primary sculptural element, an enormous organic form crafted to resemble ancient weathered wood or driftwood, rendered in warm tones ranging from rich cognac amber to deeper sienna brown, imagine the color of honey mixed with cinnamon, radiating the warmth of late afternoon sunlight, this massive wooden presence twists and flows from the ceiling downward like a frozen waterfall of timber, its surface deeply grooved with parallel striations that run along the flowing forms like the grain of old-growth wood magnified to architectural scale, the texture suggests how it might feel to run fingers along deeply weathered bark, each ridge and valley telling stories of age and elemental exposure, throughout this wooden mass are dramatic openings, cave-like apertures that pierce completely through, allowing views to other areas and to a lower level visible through a glass floor panel, warm golden light catches the undulating surfaces, creating subtle gradations of illumination where ridges catch brightness and grooves fall into gentle shadow, at left within the middle ground, a brass-toned metal framework supports hanging garments, dark jackets suspended like quiet sentinels, their presence functional yet visually subordinate to the sculptural environment, the floor beneath consists of pale wood planks in a soft honey tone, smooth and reflective, providing cool horizontal calm beneath the vertical organic drama, in the immediate foreground sits a substantial boulder of rough dark gray stone, perhaps basalt or granite, its surface chunky and mineral, providing tactile and chromatic contrast to the smooth floor and organic wooden forms, the overall atmosphere suggests entering a space where natural forces and human craft merge, creating feelings of wonder and geological timelessness within a contemporary interior.
The design team hunted for fallen dead trees in the forest and transformed them into decorative columns by slicing and encasing them in glass. The tree rings on these columns serve as a visual testament to the trials and tribulations endured by the trees during their growth in nature a perseverance that resonates with the spirit of Arcteryx, which aims to break through limits and keep reaching upwards. The concept of tree holes is also applied to the first floor, where each scene draws inspiration from nature, catering to the desires of outdoor enthusiasts.
