Makina Andras I Watch

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2024

Scanning this photograph from background to foreground, listeners encounter a luminous pale gray surface providing neutral context for a rectangular wristwatch positioned diagonally across the frame. The timepiece case presents as a substantial rectangular form in matte black metal, approximately five centimeters tall and four centimeters wide based on the partial human hand visible for scale. Beginning at the top of the watch face, the word MAKINA appears in small white letters against a narrow black strip. Below this, the main dial surface transitions through a gradient from silvered gray at the top through medium charcoal to deep graphite at center, creating a sense of atmospheric depth like twilight sky fading into night. Elongated triangular hour markers in polished steel stand dimensionally from the dial surface at twelve, three, six, and nine o'clock positions, while shorter linear indices mark the remaining hours. Two slender hands extend from center, rendered in brilliant cerulean blue suggesting cool alpine sky, the longer minute hand reaching toward the outer track while the shorter hour hand indicates approximately ten-ten position. The word ANDRAS underscore I appears in small white text at lower left, with AUTOMATIC at lower right. At the six o'clock position, a semi-circular sub-dial displays running seconds, marked with white numerals from ten through sixty against black, a blue-tipped indicator hand tracking continuous motion. The case sides present faceted planes catching subtle light variations, with a small square crown protruding from the right edge at four o'clock position. A matte black rubber strap flows from both top and bottom of the case, its surface smooth as worn leather but with the slight resilience of modern synthetic material. At the left edge of frame, portions of human fingers enter the composition, their warm peachy skin tones contrasting with the cool mechanical precision of the watch, suggesting the act of examination or presentation.

Makina Watches wanted to design a black sheep in the rectangular watch category that's already full of art deco inspired dress watches. That's why Andras I was born as a sports watch with a bolder and more modern approach. Coated in stealth black, its stainless steel case is composed of slopes and angular shapes that make up its multifaceted design. Its octagonal case is designed to taper around a larger movement for less volume and increased wearability. Its dial is multi-layered and 3 dimensional and its strap is muscular and shapely to look more imposing from every angle.
