Casa de Mar Single Family Residence

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2024

Scanning from background to foreground, this architectural photograph presents a contemporary residential compound during early evening twilight. The sky occupies the upper third, displaying a soft gradient from pale lavender-blue at the horizon to deeper periwinkle above, with a delicate crescent moon visible in the upper center, appearing as a thin curved sliver of white against the cooling sky. At right, a mature tree with smooth pale bark and spreading branches frames the composition, its dark green canopy extending into the upper right corner creating natural contrast against the sky. The architectural ensemble consists of interconnected rectangular volumes in warm limestone and rendered surfaces, colors suggesting sunbaked earth and natural stone, warm as terracotta tiles or dried wheat. The tallest mass rises at center-left, a cubic tower of approximately three stories with minimal fenestration showing subtle surface texture like weathered plaster. Below and adjacent, two-story volumes step down with large steel-framed windows that glow with warm amber light from within, suggesting the warmth of candlelight or late afternoon sun. The windows appear as golden rectangles against the muted stone surfaces. Lush tropical vegetation softens the architectural forms, including feathery palm fronds with a texture like soft brushed fabric, broad-leafed plants suggesting coolness and moisture, and ornamental grasses creating movement. The foreground presents a courtyard of crushed limestone aggregate, pale cream in color with a granular texture like coarse sand. A linear pathway of rectangular concrete stepping stones extends from the lower center toward the illuminated entrance at right, each paver smooth and cool to the touch. At far right, a covered entrance area reveals additional warm interior lighting and wall-mounted lanterns casting gentle pools of light. The overall atmosphere suggests peaceful evening transition, the air cooling as artificial warmth beckons from within.

Casa de Mar is a residence in Mérida, Yucatán, that embraces the symbiotic relationship between architecture and nature. The design integrates tranquil gardens, natural ventilation, and lighting. A central pool provides a cool breeze through water evaporation, reducing the need for air conditioning. Local materials like stone and wood are used for durability and contextual harmony. The interior design promotes serenity with a nature-inspired color palette, soft textures, and diffused lighting, creating peaceful spaces for relaxation.
