Silver A' Design Award Winner 2024
Scanning this interior photograph from background to foreground, we encounter a generous double-height space designed for communal gathering within a residential setting. The rear wall, spanning the full width of the image, features an extensive shelving system constructed from warm honey-colored wood, organized into a grid pattern of square compartments numbering approximately eight columns wide and rising perhaps five or six rows tall. The lower shelves contain books arranged in neat rows, their multicolored spines adding subtle chromatic variety, while upper compartments hold decorative objects and remain partially empty, creating visual breathing room within the dense grid. To the left, a staircase with dark metal railings ascends along a wall of smooth concrete, the surface appearing cool to the touch and displaying the subtle texture and tie-hole patterns characteristic of board-formed concrete. Strong natural light enters from unseen windows on the left, casting soft shadows across the concrete surface and creating gentle gradations from illuminated cream to shadowed gray. Two substantial cylindrical columns in the same concrete finish anchor the middle ground, their surfaces smooth and cool-toned against the warmer wood behind. The central gathering area contains two long rectangular tables crafted from pale wood, perhaps ash or maple, their surfaces smooth and light-reflective. Surrounding these tables are numerous chairs with light wood frames and soft gray fabric seats, their forms simple and inviting. Suspended above hang pendant lights with black conical shades and warm brass bands, their cables descending from exposed dark ceiling infrastructure. The floor consists of large square tiles in muted gray with subtle marbled veining, cool underfoot and providing grounding contrast to the warmth above. In the immediate foreground, portions of white curved seating elements and a white countertop surface are visible, suggesting additional gathering zones. The overall atmosphere feels luminous, calm, and welcoming.
Back to the roots is the theme of the design. Since the building is located at the foot of Ali Mountain, a large amount of wood is used as the base, creating a harmonious connection between the interior and exterior. Hometown is deeply ingrained in the mind. The hometown will always be home no matter how long you're away. In the latter half of the journey of life, the homeowner has decided to move back to the hometown. This retirement abode highlights the deep-seated love and longing for the hometown, emphasizing the unbreakable bond with family and the lasting impact it has on life.
