Skystation Sculptural Bench

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2023

This image presents a contemporary urban plaza featuring a sculptural metallic bench as its primary focal point. Scanning from foreground to background, the composition begins with a large circular seating element positioned at the bottom center of the frame, crafted from polished metal with a warm silver tone resembling brushed stainless steel. The form suggests a flattened donut or torus shape, approximately two meters in diameter, rising perhaps forty centimeters from the ground with a gentle central depression like a shallow bowl. The surface appears smooth and cool to the touch, reflecting the surrounding environment with soft, blurred highlights along its curved upper rim and deeper shadowed areas within the central concavity. Beneath and surrounding the bench extends a plaza floor composed of rectangular grey stone pavers arranged in a grid pattern, their surface appearing slightly textured like honed granite. Moving to the middle ground, a substantial brick planter rises in stepped terraces, constructed from warm reddish-brown bricks that would feel rough and granular under the hand. Within this planter grow several small trees with delicate branches carrying soft green leaves suggesting spring or early summer, their foliage appearing light and airy. At the base of the trees, flowering plants display clusters of purple-violet blooms alongside yellow and white flowers, creating a garden-like atmosphere. To the left, an elevated covered walkway or transit structure angles diagonally across the scene, supported by grey metal pylons, its white body featuring colorful display panels. A small dark abstract sculpture stands near its base. The background reveals multiple tall commercial buildings with extensive glass facades reflecting the grey sky, their surfaces creating a cool, sophisticated urban canyon. The lighting suggests an overcast day, providing even, diffused illumination without strong shadows, creating a calm, contemplative atmosphere throughout the scene.

Skystation is an interactive sculpture that also provides some public seating. The contours of the work are designed to fit the reclining human form and encourage contemplation of the sky. The seating it provides is similar to what NASA calls Neutral Body Posture, which is the shape the body returns to when free from the influence of gravity. Skystation creates an opportunity for pause, reflection and interaction within the public realm. It is inspired by the modernist idea of form follows function. It has the incidental effect of making conversations between strangers almost inevitable.
