Golden A' Design Award Winner 2023
Scanning this nighttime installation from background to foreground, the composition presents two large woven bamboo structures resembling elongated teardrop or onion dome shapes set against an expansive evening sky that transitions from deep navy blue at the top to a slightly lighter steel blue toward the horizon line visible at center. The sky occupies the upper two-thirds of the image, creating a sense of vast openness above the sculptural elements. Moving downward, the larger bamboo structure stands at right of center, rising perhaps four to five meters tall based on proportional estimation, its form widening from a pointed apex to a generous rounded base approximately three meters in diameter. This structure consists of numerous curved bamboo poles arranged in a crossing lattice pattern creating diamond-shaped openings throughout its surface, the warm golden-amber color of the illuminated bamboo suggesting the temperature of candlelight or honey held to sunlight. Within this larger structure, a white spherical light source glows with soft diffused radiance like a paper lantern, positioned in the lower interior portion. To the left stands a second similar structure at approximately two-thirds the scale of the first, echoing its teardrop form and lattice construction, similarly illuminated from within by another white spherical luminaire. The ground surface appears to be sandy beach or coastal terrain, rendered in muted tones of grey-brown with subtle textural variation suggesting granular material. Snaking across this ground plane, ribbons of warm amber light create sinuous curving pathways that wind between and around the structures, their temperature matching the bamboo glow and creating visual connections across the horizontal field. These light trails feel warm and inviting, like paths illuminated by firelight leading toward shelter. The overall atmosphere evokes peaceful contemplation, the combination of blue twilight coolness and warm amber illumination creating a sense of sanctuary and wonder within the natural coastal environment.
The Luo Shan Feng is not only the wind but also the driving force of life for the local people. After learning to live with the wind, they also develop a lifestyle that suits local conditions. Under the strong wind, to create a soothing atmosphere, the shape is considered to be arc-shaped. Through works of art, the wind can blow away the fatigue in life and let people dance with the wind. The work uses bamboo and steel bars as the primary materials, and LED light strips are placed around them. The swirl-like shape attracts people into the space and becomes a space for tourist interaction.
