Pullman Yuxi Yunnan Deluxe Five Star Hotel

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2023

This audio description presents a grand hotel lobby interior photographed from floor level looking toward a distant entrance. The space rises to perhaps four stories in height with a dramatic timber-beamed ceiling that radiates outward from center like the ribs of an enormous leaf or fan, finished in warm honey-toned wood suggesting the color of golden autumn light. Suspended throughout this ceiling framework are sculptural elements resembling floating leaves or gentle feathers, rendered in translucent pale aqua blue and soft cream white, catching light like fragments of spring sky. Beginning at the floor, polished stone in cool gray with white veining stretches across the entire expanse, its mirror-like surface reflecting the ceiling above and creating a sense of doubled height, cool and smooth as still water. Moving upward along the walls, monumental murals spanning perhaps three stories depict misty mountain landscapes with pine trees, their tones soft gray-green and slate like distant ranges seen through morning mist, evoking the contemplative coolness of mountain air. Vertical architectural columns punctuate these murals, finished in warm gold suggesting polished brass or gilt, providing rhythmic warmth against the cooler stone surfaces. Along the upper walls, vertical strips of illuminated material in soft celadon green glow gently, their color reminiscent of weathered jade or new spring leaves. At center in the middle distance, a sculptural installation of metallic latticed forms rises from a dark platform, their golden-bronze surfaces catching light like woven basketry or abstracted bird wings, flanked by cubic lanterns that emit soft ambient glow. To the right, comfortable seating in neutral taupe and warm brown fabric creates an intimate conversation area. To the left, sleek reception stations in bronzed metal await guests. The overall atmosphere combines ceremonial grandeur with welcoming warmth, the air seemingly still and hushed as befits a threshold between outer world and inner sanctuary.

The project goal was to create a hotel in harmony with nature. The inspiration comes from the scenery of Yuxi, such as raindrops, cooking smoke, and clouds in the mountains. Using water as a medium to depict the colors of the panorama of Yuxi also adds a symbolic memory point to the hotel. The concept of artistic conception and imagery in Chinese painting is applied to the space, which is simple and elegant, reflecting the rich oriental beauty. While admiring the beautiful scenery, it also enables those gathered here to rediscover and define the relationship between human and nature.
