Silver A' Design Award Winner 2023
This audio description presents two sculptural lighting installations photographed within a serene interior space characterized by warm wood tones and soft natural illumination. Beginning with orientation: the rectangular composition spans a corner setting where tatami-style floor mats create a geometric grid pattern in warm beige, like woven straw or natural fiber. A soft sage-green floor cushion rests at the lower left corner, its tufted surface suggesting comfortable seating for contemplation. Moving to the background: tall shoji-style screens span the upper portion, their wooden frames creating a regular grid of golden-amber rectangles—warm as maple syrup or autumn honey—with translucent white panels allowing diffused daylight to filter through like morning mist, creating silhouettes of foliage visible beyond. A raised wooden platform or shelf extends horizontally across the middle ground, its surface finished in rich honey-gold tones with visible wood grain suggesting natural warmth to the touch. Upon this platform rest two distinctive lighting objects. At the left side, a spherical table lamp rises on a slender chrome stem from a circular base. The shade presents as a complex geometric sphere approximately the size of a large cantaloupe, constructed from numerous interlocking white panels that fold and overlap like flower petals or origami paper, creating a soft cloud-like form that glows gently from within—warm as candlelight, soft as moonlight through curtains. At the right side, a more unusual installation emerges from a rectangular wooden box: dozens of thin metallic wire stems, bronze-colored like dried autumn grasses, rise at gentle angles leaning rightward as if blown by invisible breeze. Each wire terminates in a tiny illuminated point—small bright spots suggesting fireflies or dewdrops catching light. The overall atmosphere feels tranquil and meditative, the warm golden light creating a sense of peaceful sanctuary. Temperature reads as comfortably warm throughout, with soft textures dominating—the smooth paper of the shade, the fine wires of the stems, the woven mats below.
The luminaires are designed with a research focus on Biophilic design and kinesthetic empathy. The movement of the luminaires mimics the growth habits, movement patterns and rhythms of the plants, making the luminaires more relatable. Viewing the direction of the product relieves anxiety, tension, fatigue and other emotions. The luminaires change according to the environment (temperature, wind), making them more accessible for everyday use while creating a sense of atmosphere.
