Silver A' Design Award Winner 2023
This audio description presents an immersive art installation viewed from within a darkened interior space featuring multiple illuminated digital screens arranged in tall vertical columns. Beginning with overall orientation, the environment consists of a large rectangular room with a highly reflective black floor that mirrors all visual elements above, effectively doubling the perceived space both upward and downward. Scanning from left to right, at least five distinct vertical columns of screens are visible, each column appearing to contain approximately eight to ten individual rectangular displays stacked vertically, creating tower-like structures that reach toward an unseen ceiling. The screens themselves emit all available light within the space, functioning as both subject matter and illumination source, casting pools of colored light that glow like warm hearths against the surrounding darkness, which feels deep and velvety, suggesting the quiet hush of a contemplative sanctuary. The color temperature varies dramatically across individual screens—some radiate warm amber and golden tones reminiscent of afternoon sunlight, others pulse with cool cerulean blues suggesting twilight or digital interfaces, while magenta and violet screens contribute richness like exotic flowers blooming in darkness. The displayed content appears diverse: some screens show human figures and faces, others present graphic illustrations with bold outlines, still others depict architectural interiors flooded with natural light, and several feature text in various scripts suggesting multilingual communication. Moving toward the foreground, the lower portion of the image reveals human silhouettes—dark figures rendered small against the towering screens—their presence suggesting the impressive scale of the installation, which appears to rise perhaps four or five times human height. The floor surface possesses a glass-like quality, creating perfect mirror reflections that extend each screen column downward into apparent infinity, producing a sensation of floating between two illuminated realms.
When an art installation aims to represent a region or a community through design, it is impossible to be fully comprehensive. From the initial concept, the goal is to maximize public participation by inviting diverse voices and images that respond to the installation. Through online and social media networks, people could tag the exhibition on their Instagram stories, and people's stories have the potential to be included in the Story index. As the designs merge and become a part of the historical index, they break down barriers between reality and virtuality.
