Flow Bar

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2023

This interior space presents a dramatic bar environment dominated by an extraordinary ceiling installation of metallic sculptural elements, organized as follows for spatial orientation. Beginning with the ceiling zone which occupies the upper half of the composition, approximately sixty teardrop-shaped metal forms hang suspended from a pale taupe ceiling grid, arranged in precise rows and columns spanning the full width and depth of the visible space. Each teardrop measures roughly two to three feet in length, with bulbous rounded bottoms tapering to attachment points above, their surfaces finished in polished metal ranging from warm pewter tones where light catches the curves to deep gunmetal gray in the shadowed concavities, suggesting the cool smoothness of polished silver or aged bronze to the touch. Moving to the middle ground, two substantial concrete columns anchor the left portion of the frame, their surfaces revealing rough aggregate texture like weathered stone, providing visual weight that grounds the floating elements above. The background reveals a horizontal band of window at counter height, through which diffused daylight enters, silhouetting a single standing figure whose presence establishes human scale, perhaps five and a half to six feet tall, appearing small beneath the expansive installation. The foreground presents the bar counter itself, an angular dark form surfaced in what appears to be polished black stone or dark metal, equipped with chrome fixtures including faucets and a dome-shaped service piece. The overall atmosphere feels hushed and contemplative, the space between elements creating a sense of suspended stillness, while the warm-cool interplay of materials suggests a temperature balanced between the coolness of metal and the grounded warmth of earth-toned surfaces, the lighting subdued and dramatic like early evening shadow.

The space is blocked in dark and calm black, full of mystery and futuristic vibe. When entering the space, one's eyes will be immediately drawn to the giant art installation on the ceiling, created by the designer based on the aesthetics of the array. The installation, shaped like rounded water drops, is placed in a neat vertical and horizontal pattern and runs in a self-formed cycle. This allows viewers to perceive the rhythm of the flow of space in an unexpected way. People may sense the stillness, simplicity, and ease in this place while they are sitting here.
