Villa Madonna Hotel Extension

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2023

A twilight architectural photograph presents a contemporary hotel extension in an alpine setting, scanning from background to foreground, the upper portion reveals a pale lavender sky gradating to soft rose and amber at the distant horizon, suggesting the moment just after sunset, below this sky rises an established three-story building in traditional alpine style with white rendered walls, dark timber balconies projecting from each level, and a gently pitched roof in dark brown, warm amber light glows from several windows creating an inviting atmosphere, in the middle ground and dominating the composition stands the contemporary extension, a low horizontal structure clad in vertical timber slats the color of warm honey or light cedar, this cladding would feel smooth and precisely milled to the touch with fine grooves between each slat, the extension features an angular form with its roofline extending dramatically to the right in a gentle cantilever like an outstretched arm, a continuous band of warm white light traces the entire upper perimeter of this structure creating a glowing outline that feels like illuminated thread, at the left corner expansive floor-to-ceiling glass windows framed in dark grey metal reveal glimpses of the interior, the base of this structure consists of irregular natural stone in greys and warm ochres suggesting weathered fieldstone that would feel rough and substantial, to the right the building extends toward additional structures and a covered entrance area, an emerald green hillside rises behind dotted with small buildings, the foreground presents dark asphalt paving, the overall atmosphere suggests sophisticated mountain hospitality combining the warmth of natural materials with contemporary elegance.

The morphology of the Hotel Villa Madonna extension was determined by the purpose of identifying meaningful relationships with the natural context. This approach has allowed the adoption of an architecture that, while strongly differentiating stylistically and linguistically, manages to converse harmoniously with the more traditional character of the building to which it is juxtaposed. The intervention relates to the existing building by interpreting the basic compositional role using only technical materials that would, however, resume the logic of tradition in mountain buildings.
