Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2023
An interior architectural photograph reveals a dramatic bookstore space dominated by two enormous circular structures resembling industrial gears, their forms positioned at the left and right portions of the composition. Scanning from left to right, the eye first encounters a massive spiral bookshelf approximately three stories in height, its form suggesting a nautilus shell rendered in architectural scale, with white shelving tiers radiating outward from a central point that appears to recede infinitely into warm amber-lit depths. Books of various colors populate each shelf tier, their spines creating colorful bands of burgundy, cream, teal, and ochre against the white structure. The gear teeth along the outer edge alternate between pristine white and deep crimson red, the red carrying warmth like aged wine or polished mahogany. At composition center, a slender black pedestal table stands on the mirror-like floor, its form reflected perfectly below. The floor surface gleams like still black water, cool and impossibly smooth, creating complete mirror reflections of every architectural element above. Moving right, a second gear structure arches upward, its curved form creating a portal-like opening through which additional book displays are visible in warm golden light. The ceiling above presents as a dark grid pattern punctuated by small recessed lights like distant stars. The overall atmosphere feels hushed and reverent, suggesting the quiet of a library combined with the grandeur of a performance hall. Temperature contrasts between the warm amber-lit spiral centers and the cool black reflective floor create sensations of moving between sunlit and shadowed zones.
Inspired by the rapid development and achievements of the project location, Shenzhen Zhongshuge is created to pay tribute to the countless pioneers in this immigrant city. The spiral bookshelf is used as a symbol to show the rapid development of history and arouse the thinking of visitors at the same time. The unconventional design approach to fuse commerce and art breaks the shackles of the monotonous attributes of a space bound to function, conveys the brand's values, brings a new and novel place gene to consumers' shopping experience.
